(Song Dynasty *Kaibao Bencao*)
[Correction] Merged with "Xiangma" (Aromatic Hemp) from the Song Dynasty *Tujing Bencao*.
[Nomenclature] Shiluo (from *Jin Guangming Jing*), Xiangma.
Shizhen said: Su Song's *Tujing* separately lists a section on "Xiangma," stating it is produced in Fuzhou, and its decoction for bathing is excellent for treating wind disorders. This is indeed Cymbopogon (Lemongrass). People in Min (Fujian) call it Mao because the grass resembles hemp. Now they are combined into one entry.
[Collection of Explanations] Zhi said: Maoxiang grows in various prefectures of Jiannan Dao. Its stems and leaves are dark brown, and flowers are white; thus, it is not Baimaixiang (White Reed Fragrance).
Song said: It is now also found in Shaanxi, Hedong, and Bian Dong prefectures, with Liao and Ze Prefectures offering it as tribute. Seedlings emerge in March, resembling barley. White flowers bloom in May, though some have yellow flowers. Some produce seeds, while others do not. Roots are harvested in January and February, flowers in May, and stems/leaves in August.
Zong said: The root of Maoxiang resembles that of common reed but is bright, clean, and long. It can be used for bathing water, especially when combined with Ben Cao (likely referring to a specific herb or part). It is still included in Yinxiang (Indian Incense), blended with Fuzi (Aconite Root).
Shizhen said: There are two types of Maoxiang: this is one type of aromatic lemongrass; whereas Baimaixiang is a different variety of fragrant herb from the southern barbarian regions. The *Tang Shenwei Bencao* did not understand this distinction and conflated the white flower...
[Flavor and Properties] Bitter, warm, non-toxic.
[Main Indications] Treats sudden evil qi invasion, warms the stomach to stop vomiting, and treats cold pain in the heart and abdomen (*Kaibao Bencao*).
[Attached Prescriptions]: One new prescription.
For chronic cold consumption disease: Maoxiang flowers and Aiye (Mugwort Leaves), 4 liang each, burned until carbonized (preserving efficacy), ground into powder, formed into pills the size of wu zi (cherry pits) using millet rice paste. Initially, take 20-30 pills with Shechuangzi (Cnidium Fruit) decoction; mild vomiting is acceptable. Subsequently, take with jujube decoction for immediate effect (*Shengji Zonglu*).
Seedlings and Leaves
[Main Indications] Used for bathing water to dispel evil qi and impart fragrance to the body (*Kaibao Bencao*).
(*Bencao Shiyi*)
[Collection of Explanations] Cangqi said: Baimaixiang grows in Annan, resembling reed roots, and Taoists use it for bathing water.
Someone said: *Guangzhi* records: It grows in the valleys of southern Guang, and when blended with various famous incenses, it is extremely wonderful, surpassing those imported by ship.
Shizhen said: This is Baimaixiang from the South Sea, belonging to the category of Pai Xiang (arranged incense), distinct from the Baomao (common reed) near roads and the Maoxiang flowers of northern soils.
Root
[Flavor and Properties] Sweet, neutral, non-toxic.
[Main Indications] Dispels evil qi, imparts fragrance to the body. Decoction taken internally treats cold pain in the abdomen (Cangqi). For pediatric generalized skin sores, bat in decoction with Taoye (Peach Leaves) (Li [missing character]).
