[Swallow Droppings]
Pungent in flavor, level in nature, toxic. It treats gu poison (disease caused by poisoning from insects or magical means), gui zhu (a contagious, lingering consumptive disease), expels inauspicious evil qi, breaks the five types of lin syndrome (dysuria and related disorders), and promotes urination. It grows at Gaogu Mountain and Pinggu.
There are two types of swallows: Hu swallows and Yue swallows. The Yue swallow has a purple chest and is light and small; it is not used for medicinal purposes. The Hu swallow has black spots on its chest and a loud voice. The world calls the Hu swallow "Xiahou". They prefer to build long nests; people say some nests can hold a length of one piece of silk, which is believed to bring wealth to the household. The nest is also used medicinally, with effects similar to the droppings. It is often boiled into a decoction for bathing to treat pediatric convulsions and evil qi. Nests with entrances facing north and tails that are white-colored belong to swallows that are hundreds of years old; consuming them prolongs life. Swallow meat must not be eaten, as it is said to cause one to be swallowed by dragons when entering water; furthermore, killing swallows is inadvisable. [Heavenly Rat Droppings]
Black complexion (referring to drug characteristics or associated descriptions). Also known as Shu Gu, also known as Shi Gan. Grows in the valleys of Hepu. Collected in October and December. (Contraindicated with Bai Lian [Ampelopsis Radix] and Bai Wei [Cynanchum Atratum Root].)
Physicians no longer use it, and people in the world do not recognize it. (From Turfan excavated fragment of *Ji Zhu*, *Da Guan Ben Cao* Volume 19, *Zheng He* page 402)
[Mole]
In the world, it is called Yin Shu, also known as Yan Shu. Its shape resembles a rat, but it is larger and tailless. It is black, has a very strong and long nose, and constantly burrows through plowed fields; it can be found by digging. Currently, in various mountain forests, there is another beast, large as a water buffalo, shaped like a pig, grayish-red in color, with hind feet resembling an elephant's, white on the chest and above the tail, powerful yet dull/slow-moving, also called Yan Shu. People set nets to catch and eat it; the meat resembles beef and is often made into dried meat jerky. Its grease is also said to treat [missing character], and it is claimed that this is the King of Rats, whose single drop of essence falling on the ground instantly becomes a rat. In years of grain rodent disasters, these animals appear in large numbers, which is likely not false. The character 'Gu' is alternatively written as [missing character]. The powdered end of this rat's hoof taken with wine, or bone crushed and fermented into wine for consumption, both show good efficacy in treatment.
