(Liver of Otter) Sweet in flavor, toxic. Mainly treats Gui Zhu (ghostly affliction) and Gu Du (poisonous pestilence), removes fish bones stuck in the throat, and stops chronic cough when roasted and taken. Meat: Treats epidemic warm diseases caused by epidemic qi, as well as seasonal diseases affecting cattle and horses. Boiling feces for灌 (irrigation/administration) is also effective.
There are two types of otters: one type is large, with a head like a horse and body like a bat; it is not used in medicine. Here, the commonly seen otter should be selected; its bones also treat food stagnation. (Da Guan Vol. 18, Zheng He p. 392)
(Fox Meat) Sweet in flavor, toxic. Mainly treats female infertility, vaginal itching, and pediatric scrotal/testicular swelling. The five zang organs and intestines: Bitter in flavor, slightly cold, toxic. Mainly treats cold and fever alternating due to Gu poison, and pediatric convulsions and epilepsy. Excrement of male foxes, when burned, dispels evil influences; those found on wood or stones are authentic. Foxes are absent in Jiangdong, originating from the north and Yizhou regions; they resemble martens but are yellow, and are also adept at bewitching people. (Xin Xiu p. 222, Da Guan Vol. 18, Zheng He p. 391)
(Musk Deer Fat) Pungent in flavor, warm, non-toxic. Mainly treats carbuncles and swellings, malignant sores, necrotic tissue, wind-cold-dampness bi syndrome, flaccid paralysis or spasticity of the four limbs, swelling and qi stagnation in the head, unblocks cou li (pores/skin texture), softens and moistens the skin. It should not come into contact with the yin region, as it causes impotence. Also known as Gong Zhi. Incompatible with Rhubarb. Horn: Sweet in flavor, non-toxic. Mainly treats bi syndrome, stops bleeding, tonifies qi and strength. Grows in mountain valleys of the South Mountain or in marshes by the Huai River coast, harvested in the tenth month. Currently most abundant in Hailing, forming herds of thousands, mostly females and few males. People say one male mates with over ten females, dying immediately after mating. Its fat falling into the soil becomes good only after a year; this is called Dun Zhi, administered with wine for excellent results. Considering the deer's nature is so lustful, it should not cause human impotence. Another view states that avoiding contact with the yin prevents impotence, which makes sense. Deer meat should not be eaten with shrimp, raw vegetables, plums, peaches, or fruits, as doing so causes illness. The horn, scraped of debris and roasted until fragrant, is taken with wine...
(Toad) Pungent in flavor, cold, toxic. Mainly treats pathogenic factors, breaks up masses and blood stasis, carbuncles and swellings, genital ulcers; taking it does not lead to heat diseases. Treats genital erosion, gangrenous leprosy, malignant sores, dog bite wounds, and can fuse jade stones. Also known as Chan Chu, KT, Qu Fu, Ku. Grows in rivers, lakes, ponds, and marshes. This refers to those with large abdomens and warty skin; their skin juice is highly toxic. If bitten by a dog, the mouth swells. For humans suffering from warm disease with macules appearing and exhaustion, eating one raw can untie bindings spontaneously. Burned to ash and applied to sores yields immediate results. Its fat, when applied to jade, carves it like wax, hence said to fuse jade stones, but fat is hard to obtain. Select fat individuals, chop them, boil down to ointment, apply to jade; it is also soft, smooth, and easy to cut. Ancient jade artifacts with unique features, not carved by human hands, were mostly engraved using Kunwu knives and toad fat. (Da Guan Vol. 22, Zheng He p. 440)
