[Asiatic Pit Viper Gallbladder]
Bitter, slightly cold, toxic. Mainly treats sores and ulcers. The flesh: fermented into wine, treats leprosy (Lai Ji), various masses in the abdomen (Zha Ju), heart and abdominal pain, resolves stagnant Qi, removes Gu poison.
If the pit viper has swallowed a mouse: slightly toxic, treats scrofula (Shu Lou).
The Asiatic pit viper is yellowish-black with a yellow chin and pointed mouth; its venom is the most fierce. The Hui snake is short and flat in shape, and its venom is not as fierce as that of the pit viper. If ordinary people do not treat it immediately, death often ensues. There are many types of snakes, but only these three (the pit viper, the Hui snake, and the green snake) are the most fierce; there are separate formulas for treating them. Snakes have feet. On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, burn the ground until hot, pour wine on it, and the snake will enter the center, extending its feet. The red-footed pit vipers used by Daoist practitioners have yellow chins and are mostly found under eaves of houses, swallowing mice and young birds. When large ones are seen, they are cut open, the contents taken, and dried.
[Snake Slough]
Salty, sweet, neutral, non-toxic. Mainly treats twenty types of pediatric convulsions and epilepsy (Jing Xian), opisthotonos (Yuan Zhu), epilepsy, alternating chills and fever, intestinal hemorrhoids, insect poison, snake epilepsy, tongue protrusion and head shaking, five evils in adults (Wu Xie), abnormal speech, malignant sores, vomiting and coughing, and brightening the eyes. Frying over fire is effective. Also known as Long Zi Yi, She Fu, Long Zi Pi, Long Zi Dan Yi, or Gong Pi. Grows in valleys and fields in Jingzhou. Collected on the fifth or fifteenth day of the fifth lunar month for best quality. (Averse to magnetite and wine.)
Sloughs of Hui snakes and pit vipers are rarely seen in grass; those that are long are mostly from red-footed or yellow-chinned snakes, and their skins are unrecognizable. Often obtained nowadays, all require...
[Woo Pooh Centipede]
Pungent, warm, toxic. Mainly treats Gui Zhu (ghostly affections/chronic wasting diseases), Gu poison, poisoning from eating various snakes, insects, and fish, kills evil spirits and old essences, treats warm malaria, removes three parasites (San Chong). Treats cold-heat nodules in the heart and abdomen, induces abortion, removes bad blood. Grows in the rivers and valleys of Jiangnan in Da Wu. Those with red heads and feet are good.
Currently, red-footed centipedes mainly come from Jingkou, Changshan, Gaolishan, and Maoshan is also abundant. They are found in rotting accumulated grass; care should be taken not to injure them, then sun-dry. Yellow-footed centipedes are very common but unsuitable for use; people often roast them over fire to turn them red to pass them off as genuine, which is not true. Also known as Tu Bie Qu. Zhuangzi said: "Tu Bie Qu likes Daidao grass." Huainanzi said: "Tengshe can ride the mist, but is afraid of Tu Bie Qu." Its nature allows it to subdue snakes; upon seeing a large snake, it climbs onto it and eats its brain. Woo pooh centipedes also bite humans; applying mulberry juice and white salt to the wound cures it. (From *Daguan Bencao* Vol. 22, *Zhenghe Bencao* p. 446)
