There are two types of Hawthorn. One type is smaller and called *Tangzi* (pronounced "Qiu"). The tree grows a few feet high. It blooms white flowers in the third lunar month. The fruit resembles a small crabapple. It ripens in the ninth lunar month and can be used as medicine.
The flavor is sour and sweet, with a slightly warm nature. It enters the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian and the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian. It strengthens the spleen and stomach, and aids digestion. (It is particularly effective at resolving accumulations of fishy, muttony, or greasy foods.) It also treats accumulations, phlegm-fluids, chest fullness, acid regurgitation, blood stasis causing pain and distension, slow eruption of infantile measles/rubella, hernia of the small intestine, and lower back pain. Medical texts indicate its use for malaria, swelling, fullness, hematuria, blood retention, anorexia, and diarrhea. The seed primarily promotes labor, treats hernia, postpartum uterine lochia pain (*Erzhen Tong*), and incomplete expulsion of lochia. Consuming Hawthorn with brown sugar yields immediate results. For slow eruption of measles/rubella, decoct five Hawthorn fruits in wine, mix with warm water, and drink orally to facilitate eruption. In cases where measles/rubella appear dry, black, and critical, powder the seeds, decoct Arnebiae Radix et Rhizoma (*Zicao*) in wine, mix with the powder, and take one qian. Hawthorn inherits the Qi of Wood. Combined with Alum-processed Red Yeast Rice (*Fan Hong*), Coptidis Rhizoma (*Huanglian*), and Red Yeast Rice (*Hongqu*), it resolves internal accumulations. Combined with Red Yeast Rice (*Hongqu*), Wheat Bran (*Maipi*), Myristica Seed (*Roukou*), Atractodis Rhizoma (*Baizhu*), Amomi Fructus Rotundus (*Sharen*), and Magnolia Bark (*Houpo*), it aids digestion and strengthens the spleen. Combined with Rehmanniae Radix (*Shengdi*), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (*Danggui*), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (*Niuxi*), Dipsaci Radix (*Xuduan*), Leonuri Herba (*Yimucao*), Lycopii Herba (*Zelan*), Moutan Cortex (*Danpi*), Lygodii Sporum (*Puhuang*), and Paeoniae Radix Rubra (*Shaoyao*), it treats *Erzhen* pain and inguinal hernia. Fry equal parts of Hawthorn flesh and Fennel Fruit (*Huixiang*) to one tael each, powder them, make pills with paste the size of Chinese quince seeds, take 100 pills per dose, and swallow with plain warm water on an empty stomach. For lower back and leg pain, use equal parts of *Tangzi* and prepared Deer Antler (*Lurong*), powder them, make honey pills the size of Chinese quince seeds, take 100 pills per dose, twice daily.
[Discussion] Hawthorn is sour with a hint of sweetness, and its nature is slightly warm. The sweet quality belongs to the slight warmth of the Qi, rooted in sourness to promote movement. This implies that Wood governs Earth, facilitating the action of Autumn. This acts within the Central Earth. Phlegm-fluids and chest fullness transform; this concludes the section regarding the lower half of the body. Liver. And efficacy against cold. And also stagnation. This accumulation/stagnation should be combined with tonification...
[Processing] Harvest ripe fruits after frost. Remove the pits and dry in the sun. Or steam until cooked, remove skin and pits, pound into cakes, and dry in the sun for use.
