Original name: Mixiang (Honey Fragrance). (Its fragrance resembles honey.) Ancients called it Qingmuxiang (Green Atractylodes Root). Later, because the root of Aristolochia manshuriensis was also called Qingmuxiang, (its therapeutic effects on cold and heat patterns differ significantly), this herb was renamed Nanmuxiang (Southern Aromatic Root) or Guangmuxiang (Guangdong Aromatic Root) to distinguish it. It is also known as Wumuxiang (Five-Aromatic Root) because one plant has five roots, five stems, five branches per stem, and five nodes between leaves. When burned, its smoke reaches the highest heavens. The type classified as herbs comes from foreign ships by sea. (One account says it originates from Daqin [Rome], another from Kunlun; those from Kunlun are superior, but these are absolutely unobtainable now. Those from Xifan [Tibet] are inferior.) The variety produced in Guangzhou belongs to the woody category.
Bitter, sweet, slightly pungent. Its nature is warm and hot. Both aroma and flavor are strong. It sinks and descends, representing Yang within Yin. It mainly treats Qi deficiency and insufficiency, regulates various Qi mechanisms, harmonizes Stomach Qi, moves Liver Qi, disperses stagnant Qi in the Lungs, breaks up knotted Qi in the upper diaphragm, and dissipates chronic cold accumulations and masses in the Middle and Lower Jiao. It promotes the circulation of all Qi throughout the body, treats cold pain in the heart and abdomen, vomiting with reverse flow and regurgitation, cholera-like diarrhea and dysentery, and diseases of the Bladder and Small Intestine caused by congealed cold. It also treats bladder leakage and urinary retention, and conditions of the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) characterized by rebellious Qi and internal urgency.
Ginger acts as an assistant drug, making the effect even faster. (Li Dongyuan's view) It clears stagnant Qi in the Lungs. If treating Qi stagnation and non-circulation in the Middle and Lower Jiao, Betel Nut (Binlang) must be used as a guiding agent. (Zhang Jiegu's view) Bitter and pungent, purely Yang in nature. It treats abdominal Qi non-circulation, assists the Spleen, and regulates the ascending and descending of stagnant Qi. (Li Dongyuan's view) Moves Qi in the Liver Meridian. When roasted with fire, it can consolidate the Large Intestine. (Zhu Danxi's view) Pungency allows upward movement; suitable for regulating cases of Qi depression and failure to reach. However, if Yin Fire rebels upward, it will instead assist the Fire pathogen. In such cases, Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai) and Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu) should be used, with a small amount of Muxiang added as an assistant. (Further discussion) Muxiang is a drug for the Qi aspect of the Triple Burner. All Qi depressions belong to the Lungs, so it is used in the Upper Jiao. Middle Qi non-circulation belongs to the Spleen, so it is suitable for the Middle Jiao. Large Intestine Qi stagnation causes tenesmus; Bladder Qi failure to transform causes strangury; Liver Qi depression causes pain, so it is also suitable for the Lower Jiao. (Zhang Yuansu's view) Breaks Qi, calms the fetus. (Zhang Yuansu's view) Assistant drug. Clear and bright development, it is the divine spirit of moving drugs. Combined with Corydalis Rhizoma (Yanhusuo), it treats stabbing heart pain due to Blood and Qi stagnation in women, which is unbearable. Combined with Semen Kochiae (Qianniu), Ophiocordyceps Sinensis (Leiwu - *Note: likely referring to a specific parasitic fungus or similar antiparasitic agent in context*), and Betel Nut (Binlang), it kills all parasites. Assisted by Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) and Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao), it treats dysentery. However, it should not be used in patients with body heat, vomiting, and thirst. Combined with Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Amomi Fructus Rotundus (Sharen), Cardamomi Fructus (Baiko), and Perillae Folium (Suye), it regulates all Qi mechanisms, as well as diarrhea caused by Cold Qi attacking and causing pain.
[Discussion] Muxiang is produced in southern lands. Its nature is warm, and its taste is bitter and pungent. It is a purely Yang drug. Yang essence is offered upwards. Why do all schools judge it as descending? Actually, what ascends immediately turns to descend, thus enabling the regulation of stagnant Qi. Ascending and descending cannot depart from the Central Earth (Spleen/Stomach). This plant's roots, branches, nodes, and leaves all possess the number "five," which corresponds to the Central Earth. Is it not endowed with the pivot of ascending and descending? Therefore, assisting the Spleen is its primary merit, and moving the Liver is its secondary merit. Through the divine power of ascending and descending, the generation and transformation of the Liver become inexhaustible. With inexhaustible generation and transformation, what cold Qi cannot move? And what Qi disease cannot be treated? Generally, the Qi of substances that are warm and hot naturally ascends; ascending is the thoroughness of Qi. Those that are cold and cool naturally descend; descending is the depression of Qi. Only this substance, imbued with warm and hot Qi, can facilitate descent while ascending, i.e., transforming from ascent to descent. This perfectly aligns with the principle that Yang rises from the earth and descends from heaven, allowing all cold and cool pathogens to have no place to linger. This is the natural mechanism of ascending and descending and should not be viewed as damaging true Qi through breaking and purging. Regarding ascending and descending, sometimes due to cold and cool, Qi becomes increasingly deficient. Combining it with this substance prevents cold and cool from harming Qi. For example, in Xianglian Wan (Aromatic Coptis Pill) for treating dysentery, or when treating Qi deficiency with Liver Fire, adding this substance to bitter-cold formulas yields rapid effects. This is why Tao Hongjing called it the essence of guiding drugs, and Miao Hiyong said it is the divine spirit of clear and bright development. Miao Hiyong stated: Upon detailed examination of its therapeutic actions, it should be two different species from the current Baimuxiang (White Aromatic Root). What is currently available in markets is indeed Baimuxiang. Its taste is pungent, its nature is warm, and it specifically treats all forms of adverse Qi. Patients with Lung deficiency and internal heat should strictly avoid it. It is contraindicated in cases of Yuan Qi (Primordial Qi) deficiency and collapse, Yin deficiency with internal heat, any disease accompanied by heat, and Heart pain attributed to Fire.
[Processing] Those resembling dry bones, with a bitter taste that sticks to the teeth, are of good quality. When included in Qi-regulating prescriptions, it must not be exposed to fire. When included in decoctions, it should be ground into juice and mixed into cooked soup for administration. To consolidate the Large Intestine, it should be roasted with flour until cooked before use.
