Blood flowing from the eyes is caused by accumulated heat injuring the Liver or by erroneous medication disturbing Yin-blood. If this occurs in an acute illness with fever, Zhizi Chi Tang (Gardenia and Fermented Soybean Decoction) added with Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn), Qinpi (Ailanth Bark), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), and Chishao (Red Peony Root) can be used. If this symptom appears due to a "Huai Bing" (complication resulting from mis-treatment), even the use of Dushen Tang (Single Ginseng Decoction), Baoyuan Tang (Preserve the Origin Decoction), or Shengliao Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Raw Ingredient Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) cannot save the patient. (Ibid.) *Bianzheng Lu* records treatments for bleeding from the ears and both eyes, but the text is too lengthy to reproduce; it should be consulted. Additionally, Cheng Xinghai treated a young woman who, grieving her mother's death, wept day and night until her tears turned into blood. He used Juhua (Chrysanthemum Flower), Baishao (White Peony Root), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Fuxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Huo Formula), Guiwei (Tail of Angelica Sinensis Root), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Chenpi (Citrus Reticulata Peel), Baifu (Poria), and Shenggan (Raw Licorice Root); this case is worth referencing.
The Heart governs the vessels and manifests on the tongue. If there is heat in the Heart, blood will flow from the tongue like a gushing spring. (*Zhubing Yuanhou Lun*)
Heat obstruction in the Liver causes blood to flow like a spring; few recognize the etiology of She Nü (tongue bleeding). (*Wangshi Jiyan Fang*)
If blood suddenly flows from the tongue as if pierced by an awl, take one sheng of adzuki beans, crush them, mix with three sheng of water, stir, extract the juice, and drink it. Yao Yun stated it stops immediately. (*Zhouhou Beiji Fang*)
Another prescription: burn hair clippings equivalent to the size of a chicken egg to ash, and swallow with water. (Ibid.)
Another prescription: burn one croton seed (Badou) to fine powder, mix with ash of hair clippings equivalent to the size of a chicken egg, and take in one dose with wine. Yao Tong reported similar efficacy. (Ibid.)
Another prescription: half liang of Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), three liang of Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark), twenty Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit), steeped in two sheng of wine overnight. Remove the dregs, boil three times, and take in one dose. (Ibid.)
*Jingxin Fang* treats blood spurting from holes in the tongue like a spring, which is a Heart disease. Cauterize the hole with red-hot iron; it is effective. (*Yixin Fang*)
To treat mental restlessness and heat in the Heart meridian, with erratic blood flow causing continuous tongue bleeding, use Cunjin San.
Xin Puhuang (Fresh Polygoni Orientalis Pollen, three qian bi) Xin Baifan (Fresh White Flour, two qian bi) Niuhuang (Calcined, ground) Sheng Longnao (Natural Camphor, half qian bi each)
Grind these four ingredients together to an extremely fine powder. Mix with fresh lotus root juice and administer one qian bi. Take after meals and before bed, twice daily. (*Shengji Zonglu*)
A scholar experienced spontaneous tongue bleeding with small holes remaining. The physician did not understand the disease, but casually said: this is called "Nü" (Note: the character 'She' [tongue] is missing above 'Nü'). Fried Sophora flower powder was applied topically, and he recovered. (*Yishuo* citing *Liangfang*) Alternatively, raw Puhuang can be applied directly. (*Zhizhi Fang*)
Puhuang San treats sudden tongue stiffness and swelling, or blood spurting like a gushing spring.
Wuziyu Gu (Cuttlefish Bone) Puhuang (Stir-fried, equal parts)
Grind into a fine powder. Apply a small amount to the tongue each time. (*Danliao Fang*)
To treat tongue bleeding like an awl-puncture, mix Ouzhi (Lotus Root Juice) with Tongbian (Child's Urine) and take orally; the effect is faster. (*Weizheng Jianbian Fang*)
If blood suddenly flows from the tongue as if pierced by an awl, cover the lower abdomen below the umbilicus with a copper coin and moxa-burn fifty moxa cones under the edge of the coin. (*Zhouhou Beiji Fang*)
