This formula is primary for Xue Ye Ge (Blood-type Diaphragmatic Dysphagia). Xue Ye Ge arises from falls/blows or severe anger, causing blood to accumulate in the chest/diaphragm, coagulating over time, obstructing eating. Heat brings relief; cold causes pain. Raw leek juice resolves blood stasis; pure wine assists its movement. (*Fangkao*)

When diseases present atypical symptoms not found in classics, treatments must employ unconventional methods. For example, Wang Yujiuzhong contracted illness from fright. During dinner, he felt nauseous and wanted to vomit but couldn't, leading to fasting while maintaining normal activity. For half a month, medical prayers failed, and the family was helpless. Later, he consumed strong wine and rich foods without obstruction, but could not tolerate grain qi; touching it caused vomiting. Famous doctors in Wuzhong could not identify the disease. They tried various tonics and purgatives, and diverse elixirs including Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis), Goubao (Dog Gallstone), Huzhu Maobao (Tiger/Pig/Cat Bladder), all ineffective. For two to three months, wet noodles were tolerated, but whole grains, even if extremely soft, were immediately vomited up. By the eighth month, helplessness prevailed. An偶然 person suggested this disease cannot be cured by medicine, but requires drinking fresh goose blood while hot. One dose brought relief. Though not in medical texts, reasoning suggests no harm. On a night in the first lunar month, a goose was slaughtered, blood taken and drunk hot. Swallowing produced sound; after enduring it several times, a sheng of bloody clot was vomited shortly after, containing several blood clots. That night, a small test of thin porridge was not vomited. Gradually, he could eat rice, increasing from little to much, recovering without herbal medicine. This story spread far and wide; for ge ye (diaphragmatic dysphagia) and vomiting, it is effective. One should know that although ge ye/vomiting belongs to stomach blood depletion, if there were no internal stasis, why would rejection occur? Thus, using the power of similar qi resonance, one surge disperses everything. This is truly a good method of tonifying while purging. Observing that goose blood can stimulate gastric stagnation, fresh duck blood or fresh yellow cattle blood might also work. The principle is always "using blood to attack blood" without harsh purgation damaging the stomach. (*Yixue Bidu*) (Note: Original text is lengthy, excerpted here. Also refer to *Yisheng* by former Instructor regarding goose blood for dysphagia.)

If dysphagia involves food needing to pass through a curved path and difficulty swallowing liquids, use Runxue Tang (Note: This refers to Danxi's Siwu Tang plus Chenpi, Taoren, Gancao, Honghua, further adding Mahuang and Huangqin). If constipation is severe, add a small amount of wine-steamed Dahuang (Note: *Yinfu Juece Tongzhi* adds Xuanmingfen). (*Yuanbing Ji*)

Method for Resolving Fluid Retention: The wife of Magistrate Zhang Mengduan developed dysphagia upon eating and hidden chest pain after worry and anger. I diagnosed her pulse as tight and slippery, indicating phlegm in the upper jiao. I used Erchen Tang plus Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice) and Zhuli (Bamboo Sap). Eldest son Boyuan asked: "Is Banxia (Pinellia) drying?" I replied: "With damp-phlegm filling the middle, only this can treat it." After four doses, symptoms persisted. Changed to Xiaobanxia Tang. After four more doses, chest pain stopped; after another four, dysphagia decreased; after twenty doses, she recovered. If one rigidly considers Banxia as drying and substitutes it, how could it cure? (*Yixue Bidu*)
Qisheng Tang.
