Yu Jiayan said: In the human body, abundant and plump muscles indicate flourishing Ying Blood (nutritive blood), which is an excellent state. However, flourishing blood may easily lead to deficient Qi (vital energy), and over time, this imbalance becomes more pronounced. Qi and Blood mutually support and adhere to each other; why do they become deficient or flourishing unevenly? Generally, when Qi is dominant, Blood flows; when Blood is dominant, Qi fails to flow. This is not a decline of True Qi (original vital energy), but rather Qi appears deficient because it does not flow. Therefore, all tonifying Qi herbs should not be used, whereas herbs that dissipate Qi can actually be applied. Because Qi, when tonified, becomes further obstructed and stagnant, it is better to use dissipation methods to assist its flowing momentum. Over time, Blood will still return to its control. (From *Yi Tong*)
The world generally claims that there is no method for tonifying Qi. Formulas in *Ju Fang* (Prescriptions from the Imperial Medical Bureau) and *San Yin*, such as Qi Qi Tang (Seven Qi Decoction), Si Mo Tang (Four Grinds Decoction), and Liu Mo Tang (Six Grinds Decoction), all contain Ren Shen (Ginseng Root). Could this not cause harm by aiding Qi excessively? (Note: The Si Mo Tang in *Yi Tong* originates from *Ji Sheng*, contains no Mu Xiang (Costus Root), but contains Ren Shen. Liu Mo Tang contains Mu Xiang but no Da Huang (Rhubarb Root). Hence this statement.) Ancient physicians did not prescribe Ren Shen solely for tonification. For instance, Qi Qi Tang in *Ju Fang* originally uses Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) and Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber) as main herbs, borrowing Ren Shen to guide Qi into the Qi level to disperse Qi stagnation. Is this considered tonification? As for Qi Qi Tang in *San Yin*, it consists entirely of acrid-dispersing herbs. Even if only one dose of Ren Shen is used, it merely follows other herbs to perform the function of moving Qi, preventing injury to Qi, which is sufficient. There is no room to exert its tonifying nature. Regarding Si Mo Tang and Liu Mo Tang, they are relied upon to meet the needs of combating pathogens, let alone expecting them to have a tonifying effect. (Ibid.) (Note: The general principles for treating Qi diseases have been discussed in my work *Yao Zhi Tong Yi*; please refer to it.)
Formulas for Benefiting Qi (Including Phlegm-Fluid Draining Formulas and Stagnation-Dredging Formulas)
Da San Wan San (Great Three Jiao Powder) treats rebellious Qi in the Triple Burner (San Jiao), relieves severe constipation, and reduces chest and hypochondriac fullness with fatigue.
Da Fu Pi (Ampelopsis Radix, 1 liang, roasted yellow) Zi Su (Perilla Leaf with stem, 1 liang) Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, 3 fen) Du Huo (Angelica Pubescens Root, 1 liang) Chen Xiang (Aquilaria Lignum, 1 liang) Mu Xiang (Costus Root, 3 fen)
Gan Cao (Licorice Root, 3 fen, lightly roasted) Mu Gua (Chaenomeles Fruit, sliced, dried, weighed 1 liang) Chen Ju Pi (Tangerine Peel, soaked in water, white pith removed, 2 fen dry) Bing Lang (Areca Seed, 3 fen, cooked wrapped in flour) Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome, 1 liang)
These eleven ingredients are pounded together into a coarse powder. Each dose weighs 1 fen (Note: *Huo Ren Shu* states 1 liang). Add 2 zhan (units of liquid volume) of water, decoct until 1 zhan remains, remove dregs, and divide into two doses. Take warm. Effect is achieved when bowel movement occurs. If taken regularly at night, half a dose, decocted according to this method, harmonizes the fu organs and prevents wind-Qi constipation. For patients with constipation who have not responded to several doses of purgatives, decoct and take this internal medicine; it promotes smooth passage, is highly effective, and does not damage healthy Qi. It has many successful experiences. It is most suitable for Hong Jiao (foot disease/gout), chest and abdominal Qi oppression, and severe constipation. (From *Chuan Jia Mi Bao*)
He Ji San He San (Harmonizing Three Harmonies Powder from the Imperial Medical Bureau) treats disharmony of the Five Viscera, dysfunction of the Triple Burner, epigastric stuffiness, hypochondriac distension, wind-Qi congestion, limb joint pain, facial puffiness, slight swelling of hands and feet, dryness and astringency of intestines and stomach, and difficult defecation. It can be taken even by the elderly and weak. It also treats back and hypochondriac pain interfering with eating, Hong Jiao attacking upward, chest and abdominal fullness, and constipation. Remove Du Huo and add Qiang Huo (Notopterygium Root) from this formula. Ji Feng San He San (Three Harmonies Powder from *Ji Feng*) removes Chuan Xiong and adds Mu Tong (Akebia Stem) from the He Ji formula (indications same).
Qi Qi Tang (Seven Qi Decoction): Discussion states that all diseases arise from Qi. Generally, it stems from joy, anger, sorrow, fear, shock, labor, cold, and heat. Joy causes Qi to relax; anger causes Qi to rebel; sorrow causes Qi to consume; fear causes Qi to sink; shock causes Qi to scatter; labor causes Qi to deplete; cold causes Qi to contract; heat causes Qi to leak. Changes arise from these. If Qi arises on one side (Note: Original text lacks "side" character, supplemented from *Zhi Huo Mi Fang*), left or right, circulating up and down, or within muscles, feeling like needle or knife pricks, Qi cannot breathe freely, causing abdominal fullness. This is due to fright, joy, anger, or exposure to cold/heat, remaining gathered and不散 (not dispersing), becoming latent Qi. It circulates along meridians, transmitting up and down causing pain. Long-term leads to stuffiness, constipation, short and choppy pulse, called Ju Qi (Accumulated Qi). Suitable for this medicine and Chen Tong San.
Jing San Leng (Burreed Tuber) Peng E Zhu (Curcuma Rhizome) Qing Ju Pi (Green Tangerine Peel) Chen Ju Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel) Huo Xiang Ye (Patchouli Leaf) Jie Geng (Platycodon Root) Yi Zhi (Alpinia Oxyphylla Fruit) (each 1 liang) Xiang Fu Zi (Cyperus Rhizome, 1.5 liang) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, 3 fen)

(From *Ji Feng*) Zhi Zhi and Zhi Mi Qi Qi Tang treat interference of Seven Emotions (Seven Affects), failure of Yin and Yang to ascend and descend, Qi knotting and congestion, attacking and causing pain. Remove San Leng, add La Gui (Cinnamon Twig) 1 liang, and Ban Xia 3 fen from this formula. Ji Sheng Da Qi Qi Tang (Great Seven Qi Decoction) treats Liu Ju (Six Accumulations), adding Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) to this formula. (*Huo Fa Mi Fang* names it Ju Qi Tang, indications same.)

(From *Yang Shi*) He Ji names it Mu Xiang Liu Qi Yin. There is also Er Shi Si Wei Liu Qi Yin (Twenty-Four Ingredient Flowing Qi Infusion), named same as Mu Xiang Liu Qi Yin, but lacks Shi Chang Pu and Huo Xiang, contains Chen Xiang (Aquilaria Lignum), Da Huang (Rhubarb Root), Zhi Ke (Aurantium Fruit). From *Ji Yan Fang*. (*Yi Fang Kao* says: Qi patterns differ from other patterns. Other patterns, such as phlegm, blood stasis, food accumulation, belong to tangible forms, thus localized to one area, corner, can be treated with single formulas. As for Qi of Seven Emotions, it belongs to intangible form, scattering up, down, left, right irregularly, so gather acrid-aromatic substances to make it flow. Although twenty-four ingredients, not too many, like Han Hou's army, the more the better.) Divided into Fen Xin Qi Yin (Dividing Heart Qi Infusion) (indications recorded below under Fen Xin Qi Yin).
