(This is the toxic influence generated by the accumulation and steaming of mountain mist and stream humidity.)
The symptoms involve blood rushing to the upper jiao (upper burner, referring to the chest and head), causing coma. In severe cases, it leads to restlessness and madness; some patients lose their voice and cannot speak. All these are caused by failed blood stasis in the heart and the accumulation of toxic phlegm-saliva in the stomach. Use Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) 2 qian, Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) 5 qian, Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum) 1 qian, Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) 1 qian, Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Preparatus with Bran) 1 qian, Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) 2 qian, Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 6 fen, Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 7 fen, Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) 3 slices, and Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus) 1 piece. Decoct and take orally for efficacy.
The symptoms include a dark complexion, yellow eyes, white tongue coating with slurred speech, locked jaw, and chest pain. The condition progresses rapidly, leading to death within two or three days. People often mistakenly treat this as Wu Sha Zhang (Black Miasma), which frequently results in fatal errors. If encountering this syndrome, first pry open the jaw, wipe away the white tongue coating with blue cloth, then use a copper coin dipped in salt water to scrape both Tai Yang acupoints (located at the junction of the lateral end of the eyebrow and the outer canthus; if depressions appear after scraping, the location is correct). Scrape until purple spots and blisters appear, then prick with a needle to bleed until yellow fluid is discharged. Treat both sides of the neck in the same manner. Subsequently, use Sheng Da Huang (Raw Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) 3 qian and Liu Huang (Sulfur) 1 qian, crush them together into coarse powder. Add two zhong of water, decoct to one zhong, and take warm for immediate recovery.
(Jia, pronounced like "jia". It means grasping objects with the hand.)
The symptoms include sudden swelling and pain in the throat, excessive phlegm-saliva obstruction making it difficult to swallow even water, and in severe cases, swelling of the neck. There is alternating chills and fever, heat sensation in the head and face, or cold extremities (Si Zhi Jue Ni) and irregular breathing. Use Zhen A Wei (Ferulae Resina) 3 fen, She Xiang (Moschus) 3 fen, Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus) 1 seed (de-oiled), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) 1 seed (skin and tip removed), and Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus) 1 piece (pit removed). Crush them together thoroughly, form pills the size of a wu-tong seed, coat with Yin Zhu (Cinnabar), and wrap in one layer of cotton paper. When using, tear off the paper, and insert into the nostril according to the rule: left for males, right for females. Recovery occurs upon sweating. Avoid wind and observe dietary restrictions for two to three days. (The specific forbidden foods are not stated; eating only porridge, rice, and simple side dishes is acceptable.)
Liu Songfeng's note: This case involves heat-toxin but uses Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus), a hot-natured herb. This follows the principle of "treating heat with heat" (Re Yin Re Yong) and the concept of using toxicity to combat toxicity. Although this syndrome and the previous one both involve diseases of the throat, their symptoms and treatments differ significantly.
