Liu Yin (Retained Fluid) refers to fluid retention that remains in the body and is not expelled. The symptoms include epigastric fullness and obstruction, hiccups, and dizziness. It is primarily treated with Xiong Gui Gui Po Tang (Sichuan Lovage and Angelica Cinnamon and Magnolia Bark Decoction).

Chuanxiong and Danggui are blood-invigorating herbs entering the Liver channel; Shengjiang and Guizhi open the Taiyang channel; Zhishi, Houpo, Chenpi, Banxia, and Fuling eliminate phlegm and dampness; Tianma and Juhua assist Chuanxiong and Danggui in ascending the medicinal power. While most formulas direct qi downward, this one alone directs it upward. It uniquely employs blood-invigorating herbs because cold-fluid invasion affects the Liver, causing poor blood circulation. Fu Yin (Hidden Fluid) refers to fluid hidden within the body that cannot be discharged. Symptoms include excessive phlegm, chest fullness, wheezing, coughing, and expectoration. Upon attack, there are alternating chills and fever, back pain, waist pain, and severe trembling of the body. This occurs because the Qi of the Three Yang channels is suppressed by Yin pathogens, leading to stagnation and failure to diffuse smoothly. It is primarily treated with Guizhi Banxia Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Pinellia Decoction).

Guizhi Ramulus Cinnamomi (8 fen) Banxia Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparatum (1.5 qian) Fuling Sclerotium Poriae (3 qian) Chenpi Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (1 qian) Baizhu Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (2 qian) Jiezi Semen Sinapis (1 qian) Houpo Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis (1 qian) Zisu Folium Perillae (1 qian) Beimu Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae (2 qian) Gancao Radix Glycyrrhizae (4 fen) Shengjiang Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (3 slices)
This formula combines Ling Gui Zhu Gan Tang (Poria, Cinnamon Twig, Atractylodes, and Licorice Decoction) with Er Chen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction). Then, Jiezi is added to remove water from beneath the skin and between membranes. Combined with Shengjiang and Guizhi, its warming and unblocking power is greatly enhanced. Zisu assists Shengjiang and Guizhi; Beimu assists Banxia; Houpo assists Chenpi. Formulas for treating Fu Yin can also be used to treat Nue Ji (Malaria). Generally, without phlegm, malaria does not form. Seeing symptoms such as alternating chills and fever, and severe bodily trembling, is it not a sign that hidden fluid/phlegm fails to discharge and has signs of transforming into malaria? Among the six formulas for treating Yin syndromes, each contains components of Er Chen Tang; five contain Guizhi and Shengjiang; three contain Baizhu. This reveals the major principles of medication for treating Yin syndromes. This is an annotation by Zu Yi.
