However, Western medicine possesses an extremely precise scientific system but lacks the opportunity to absorb the unique strengths of Chinese herbal medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and its herbs inherently possess corresponding strengths for such conditions; yet, due to the complexity of theories and abstract arguments, those Chinese herbs that are far superior to Western methods in treating this condition must undergo decades of trials (including failures and successes), repeated comparisons, and be selected based on each patient's individual constitution—discarding the dross and selecting the gold—to hopefully obtain truly effective treatment methods. Only on this basis can one dare to decisively correct the errors in Western medical texts, stating: "For treating uterine fibroids (uterine tumors), Chinese medicine is superior to Western medicine; if treated correctly, it will absolutely not lead to a fatal outcome within one to one and a half years." Western surgical intervention for this condition should only be used as a last resort to supplement the shortcomings of Chinese medicine, but this method is also not absolutely perfect, a fact that must be known.
(Treatment Methods) In treating this condition, Western internal medicines have mostly proved ineffective after numerous trials. During massive hemorrhage, Western hemostatic agents or suppositories also lack specific effects; furthermore, surgical resection often has many drawbacks, which must be known. In 1937 (the 26th year of the Republic of China), I treated the wife of Mr. Wang Mushao, No. 2 Yanle Hutong, Dongsi Pailou. Upon examination, she was found to have hepatic blood stasis and complete cirrhosis, with unbearable hypochondriac pain. Inquiry revealed that initially, due to a uterine tumor, she underwent surgery at a foreign hospital, after which this condition soon appeared. Despite treatment by renowned TCM and Western doctors, all deemed it incurable. The patient was only thirty years old; looking at her pre-surgery photos, she had a plump physique, and inquiry confirmed that her uterine disease was not severe at the time. Yet, she resolutely chose surgery, leading to such danger and loss of life, how regrettable. We must not blindly believe in new theories without deep research; when having faith in medical treatments, we must be even more cautious and never harbor the psychology that "all Western learning is sacred." TCM treatment for this condition, specifically referring to metrorrhagia (sudden heavy vaginal bleeding) and metrorrhaxis (prolonged irregular vaginal bleeding), employs flexible and ingenious methods, traditionally including clearing and tonifying, filling and tonifying, nourishing Yin, tonifying Qi, harmonizing blood, and astringing. Treatment tailored to the individual often yields results. Deaths due to ineffective medicine account for only one or two out of ten. Here, three cases are recorded: Case A failed with Drug B, and Case B failed with Drug A, yet amidst the shift in condition, these extremely dangerous hemorrhages showed hope of recovery. Although not a radical cure, this sufficiently proves that the Western medical dictum of death within one to one and a half years cannot be fully trusted.
(Clinical Verification) (A) Madam Yin, over forty years old (wife of my friend Mr. Yin Hancen), lived on East Street of the Old Prefecture Office in Dezhou City. In the Yiwei year, she suffered from metrorrhagia, preceded by severe leukorrhea. She first consulted a Western doctor and took ergot for three days, but bleeding did not completely stop. Due to excessive blood loss, Mr. Shi Mianqing and I conducted a joint consultation. We observed weak spirit, shortness of breath, and fine, thin pulses in all six positions. We proposed a major tonic for Qi and Blood, combined with soothing the Liver and tonifying the Spleen. One dose yielded significant effect; taking the modified original prescription for over thirty doses led to recovery. This person is still alive today. The original prescription is recorded below: Radix Codonopsis (Dangshen) 4 qian, Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui) body 6 qian, Prepared Radix Astragali (Huangqi) 4 qian, Earth-fried Radix Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu) 1 liang, Fried Radix Paeoniae Alba (Baishao) 8 qian, Rhizoma Dioscoreae (Shanyao) 8 qian, Rhizoma Cyperi (Shengma) 1 qian, Radix Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong) 1 qian, Radix Bupleuri (Chaihu) 2 qian. Decoct and take orally.
(B) Elderly Woman Zhang, 48 years old, lived in Che Lifan Village, outside South Gate, Tongzhou (my female servant in Beijing, still here). In 1934 (the 23rd year of the Republic of China), she suffered from metrorrhagia. Previously, she had leukorrhea, frequent lower back and abdominal pain, and a mass in the abdomen like a large bowl (tumor). After each episode of bleeding, the mass gradually shrank, but menstrual leakage persisted. After accumulating stasis for several days, the mass grew again, followed by the discharge of large amounts of bloody fluid. This cycle repeated for over a year, causing gradual physical decline until she could no longer work. She frequently experienced urinary retention, dizziness, dry heaving, and limb soreness; menstruation occurred every three to five days, sometimes daily, becoming a severe condition. One night, sudden metrorrhagia occurred, filling a basin, leading to convulsions. (This condition had previously taken Western medicines, suppositories, and Madam Yin’s TCM prescription, all with little effect.) At that time, one injection of a cardiac stimulant (Coronin) was administered; she was extremely debilitated with minute pulses. Thereafter, TCM treatment was adopted. The original prescriptions are recorded below. If bleeding were excessive, Western blood transfusion would be highly effective, but unaffordable for poor families.

Guide: Decoct and take. On the 22nd, three doses were taken.
After taking approximately twenty-plus doses of decoctions, spirit had recovered, and the body gradually became robust. Fortunately, the patient was a peasant woman with strong constitution, so recovery was relatively easy. However, metrorrhaxis had not completely stopped. Taking this formula for one hundred days stopped the bleeding, strengthened the body, and allowed return to normal work. This pill medicine is extremely effective and cannot be ignored.
Baifeng Wan (White Phoenix Pill): Take one pill morning and evening with plain water. Guide: Earth-fried Radix Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu), Rhizoma Zingiberis (Ganjiang), etc. (Refer to original single guide prescription).
This case was more dangerous than Case (A). During massive hemorrhage (metrorrhagia), there seemed no hope of survival. After injecting the cardiac stimulant, heart qi could barely be maintained, but bleeding continued, leaving seemingly no options. Even administering a large dose of Yin’s Formula (the verified formula from Case A) was ineffective. Case (A) was characterized by Yang deficiency exceeding Yin deficiency, so treating primarily by strengthening the Spleen, assisted by Codonopsis and Astragalus, yielded great results. Case (B) was purely Yin deficiency; thus, repeated use of Case (A)’s formula was ineffective and worsened bleeding. (In this case, bleeding occurred every ten-plus days, or seven to eight days. After bleeding, abdominal pain ceased; after a few days, pain returned, the tumor swelled larger, causing more bleeding, then the mass gradually subsided, but leakage increased. This lasted about half a year. During this period, oral Western medicines and suppositories were used, yielding minor effects, but the blood tumor swelled larger, accompanied by frequent urinary retention. Western diuretics were effective.) Eventually, the malignant tumor collapsed. According to Western medicine, such a condition is inevitably fatal. Yet, under the principle of major Yin-nourishing treatment in TCM, over twenty doses of Chinese medicine miraculously saved her life. Moreover, Baifeng Wan is not a rare or exotic item; its efficacy is unexpectedly profound. For a uterine tumor considered difficult by TCM and definitely fatal by Western medicine, it worked so effectively. While Western medicine considers this incurable, even TCM fails in 80-90% of cases if treated improperly, leading to death. Thus, these two cases are recorded for study. Also, Case (B) did not respond to Case (A)’s formula. Perhaps because Yin was wealthy and Zhang was a peasant, their daily nutrition, lifestyle, and constitution differed? Therefore, using the same approach yielded results for Yin but not Zhang? Both cases were dangerous, with (B) being more critical, life hanging by a thread. Now both are robust, eating and living like normal people. Case (A) has passed eighteen years, Case (B) over five years, both healthier than before. One is in my hometown, the other in my Beijing residence, both accessible. I invite sincere scholars and skilled physicians to study them.
(C) Madam Dong, lived on Da Si Street in Dezhou City, wife of my friend Mr. Dong Ruizhi. She suffered from metrorrhaxis for over a month. Mr. Dong gave her Fu Qingzhu’s established formula, but it was ineffective. The blood color became paler, the patient grew weaker day by day, with sallow and emaciated complexion. I treated her, curing her in over ten doses. She is still alive today. This was an initial stage of menstrual leakage. The original prescription is recorded below:
First Prescription: Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Quandanggui) 3 qian, Earth-fried Radix Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu) 4 qian, Fructus Evodiae (Wuzhuyu) 1 qian, Fried Radix Paeoniae Alba (Hangshaoyao) 3 qian, Radix Codonopsis (Dangshen) 3 qian, Radix Rehmanniae Preparata (Shudi) 3 qian, Carbonized Cortex Cinnamomi (Zongtan) 3 qian, Prepared Radix Astragali (Zhi Huangqi) 1 qian, Radix Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong) 1 qian, Radix Sanguisorbae (Diyu) 3 qian, Rhizoma Cyperi (Shengma) 0.5 qian. Guide: Ginger and Jujube. Decoct and take orally.
Second Prescription: Based on the previous formula, add Radix Notoginseng (Sanqi) 1 qian, remove Rhizoma Cyperi (Shengma) and Radix Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong), rest remains the same. Total: First prescription taken for seven doses, second for twelve doses, leading to recovery.
Headache and Vertigo (II) Headache and Vertigo
This refers to chronic headache or vertigo, or migraine. Acute excess patterns at onset are not included here.
(Etiology) Chronic headache or migraine, according to Western medicine, is mainly related to brain disorders or influences from dental and ocular diseases. Neurological vertigo is more a phenomenon of central nervous system weakness. In TCM, the main focus is usually summarized in eight characters: Kidney deficiency, Yin depletion, and stirring of internal wind.
(Treatment) Effective TCM treatments mainly focus on nourishing Yin, clearing heat, pacifying the Liver, and tonifying the Kidney. Western medicine first checks for pathogens; for example, if there are eye or dental diseases, extracting diseased teeth or curing eye diseases may resolve the headache automatically. Medications are mainly analgesics, brain tonics, and stimulants, such as caffeine, but caution is needed due to its potency. Based on my experience, if there are no dental or ocular causes, TCM treatment is preferable.
(Clinical Verification) In my youth, my body was weak, and I suffered from migraines for years. Exposure to cool wind immediately triggered headaches. Later, through exercise and attention to health, it healed naturally. One year, returning home from Beijing for my second son’s wedding, I caught a cold and had no time to treat it. Over time, it induced a migraine, worse on the left side in the afternoon, with yellow nasal discharge. Long-distance travel caused extreme pain. I relied on aspirin tablets to reduce fever and pain, merely coping. Later, one dose of Western medicine caused vomiting; repeated attempts failed, and it couldn't cure the root cause, only providing temporary relief. I then switched to TCM, combining dispersing actions with headache relief, with minor effect. Since I missed the chance to induce sweating at the onset and delayed treatment for days, dispersing herbs were no longer suitable, hence limited effect. However, every afternoon, body temperature rose, and migraine worsened. I urgently prescribed Forsythia (Lianqiao), Chrysanthemum (Juhua), Mulberry Leaf (Sangye), Scutellaria (Huangqin), Mint (Bohe), Bitter Tea (Kudingcha), Prunella (Xiakucao), Ligusticum (Gaoben), Angelica Dahurica (Baizhi), Lotus Leaf Edge (Heyebian), and fresh Imperata Rhizome (Maogen). One dose yielded miraculous effect, halving the illness; three doses showed major improvement; six doses led to recovery. This formula is extremely effective for migraines, tested repeatedly.
Madam Zhang, lived on Daying Street in Dezhou City, wife of General Zhang Huchen, my friend, aged fifty. She suffered from habitual dizziness, sometimes nausea, triggered by overwork or anger. Left pulse was wiry and tight, right pulse small and weak. This is internal wind rising, with Liver and Kidney losing their free flow and moistening principles, disturbing the head. Treatment should soothe the Liver and nourish the Kidney; long-term use brings stability. Since taking my prescription, she hasn’t relapsed for years. Original prescription:
Frost-treated Folium Mori (Sangye) 2 qian, Yellow Chrysanthemum (Huangjuhua) 4 qian, Tribulus (Jili) 3 qian, Fresh Rehmannia Root (Xianshengdi) 2 qian, Raw White Peony Root (Shengbaishao) 3 qian, Light Bamboo Leaf (Danzhuye) 3 qian, Tender Uncaria (Gouteng) 1 qian, Raw Oyster Shell (Shengmuli) 2 qian, Broad Bean Hull (Ludoupi) 3 qian, Black Sesame (Heizhima) 3 qian. Decoct and take orally. Every three to five days, regardless of dizziness, take two to three consecutive doses, and pay attention to lifestyle preservation.
Gastric Ulcer (III) Gastric Ulcer
This condition is common. TCM terms include epigastric pain, gastric abscess, and colloquially "heartburn," which are vague and unclear. Hence, the Western medical term is adopted.
(Etiology) This disease arises from inappropriate stimulation of the gastric mucosa, such as excessive stomach acid (colloquially "acid regurgitation"), and overconsumption of spicy, fried, or roasted foods, e.g., tobacco, alcohol, fried foods, grilled items. Poor chewing, e.g., binge eating without chewing. Extreme cold, extreme heat, semi-raw, hard-to-digest foods, and general lack of self-care, e.g., irregular meals, overwork, and excessive indulgence. These cause obstacles in gastric blood circulation, leading to this disease.
(Symptoms) This disease has definite symptoms, making diagnosis easy. Initially, frequent acid regurgitation occurs, or some patients don't regurgitate acid but develop gradual epigastric pain. Described below:
1. Epigastric pain: Occurs after meals. When severe, it feels like internal squeezing or strange pain from blood accumulation.
2. Vomiting: A necessary symptom; pain alleviates after vomiting food.
3. Back distending pain: Lasts one to two weeks or two to three months, with intermittent back distension/pain.
4. Constipation: In 80-90% of cases, stools are dry.
5. Hematemesis: Must follow severe pain. At the bleeding stage, the ulcer has ruptured, with massive vomiting of dark red blood. Simultaneously, part of the blood passes through the intestines, turning dark black due to intestinal action. Appetite remains normal or increases. Tongue is usually clean without coating. Pain may radiate to the chest and ribs. At the bleeding stage, it is unlikely to be confused with other pains.
(Treatment) Chinese herbs seem useless for this disease, having been tried multiple times with zero effect. Including formulas for epigastric pain, I completely adopt Western treatment methods for this condition, with near-perfect success. Initially, it is merely excessive stomach acid and bloating after eating acid. Diagnosis, if accompanied by constipation, involves administering Glauber's salt (Mirabilite) with Sodium Bicarbonate, clearing intestinal contents while neutralizing stomach acid, similar to TCM's "digestion-promoting" method, curing in a few days. This refers to mild cases where no ulcer has formed. If chronic epigastric pain and vomiting persist, it indicates obstructed gastric blood circulation. First, cleanse the gastrointestinal tract with artificial salt and Sodium Bicarbonate. Simultaneously, administer analgesics, e.g., Morphine sulfate, Papaverine, but avoid maximum doses. Careful treatment, combined with dietary care, can cure in two to three weeks. If massive hematemesis and melena occur, the ulcer has ruptured, which is very dangerous. First, keep the patient lying down, forbid solid food, drink only milk or rice soup for three weeks, no vegetables. Avoid panic. Internally administer Lead Subnitrate, which covers the ulcer surface to promote scabbing. Use Sodium Bicarbonate; for severe pain, add Morphine sulfate or Phospho-Euphorbin. Take artificial salt morning and evening; this drug has no habit-forming properties, so long-term use is safe. Continue for about four weeks without interruption. The patient must not stand or walk. After bleeding, by the fourth week, when pain subsides, indoor sitting and slow walking are allowed, with light porridge. One or two weeks later, easily digestible foods can be slightly introduced. Medication must not be interrupted for at least one month. With careful nursing using artificial salt, etc., cure is certain. This condition is more common in women and young adults. Surgical operation is unnecessary. If treated improperly, sequelae often develop into TCM's "dysphagia" (Yige), colloquially "reverse eating disease."
(Clinical Verification) Before perforation, this condition cannot be called an ulcer, only epigastric pain. The two clinical cases listed in this compilation are both severe, perforated cases.
