Mr. Yu Shizheng, a Jinshi degree holder, suffered from pain due to a metallic injury (metallic trauma), with continuous bleeding and aversion to cold accompanied by fever. After using antitoxic drugs such as Baidu San, his condition worsened; this was because excessive blood loss caused Qi to lose its attachment, resulting in deficiency. He was then treated with Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Ruan Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), and Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix), after which he recovered immediately.
During my tenure in the North, the son of Academician Jia from Liudu (Nanjing), aged sixteen, had suffered from Liuzhu (a purulent disease occurring deep in muscles) for two years. When Mr. Jia was promoted to Minister of Rites (Beizongbo), he invited me to treat him. His pulse was surging and rapid, with thin pus, thirst, poor appetite, night sweats, morning chills, and evening fevers. I stated: "This is a deficiency of both Qi and Blood; the primary treatment should be to consolidate Qi and Blood." In the morning, he took Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) plus Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Zhi Cao (Prepared Licorice Root); in the afternoon, he took Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) plus Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix), and Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus). After two months, most symptoms subsided. Another physician used diuretic and harmonizing drugs, claiming guaranteed survival, but after three months of treatment, the patient's Qi and Blood became extremely deficient, and his body became emaciated. He begged for my treatment again, but I was ordered south at that time. He subsequently died.
The nephew of Grand Secretary Li suffered a leg injury from a fall. After applying external poultices containing Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and taking internal blood-breaking agents, internal ulceration occurred. I punctured the area to drain approximately three bowls of foul pus. At this point, all deficiency signs were present. After more than two months of treatment with major tonifying formulas, he could barely walk. Due to mental exertion, he developed flaccid hands, closed eyes, and profuse sweating like water. Someone suggested using wind-dispelling formulas. I said: "This is due to insufficient Qi and Blood." I urgently applied hot moxa compresses frequently to the navel (Shenque, CV8) and Qihai (CV6) acupoints, and administered a decoction of four taels of Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and five qian of Pao Fuzi (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix). After a long while, his arms moved slightly. Another dose was administered, after which his eyes opened and he could speak, though his breath was intermittent. Then, one jin of Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) [Note: Text says ' 、归、术', implying Renshen, Danggui, Baizhu] combined with five qian of Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) was decocted in water and taken slowly, leading to the healing of the wound.
A seventeen-year-old girl sprained her right arm, presenting with slight swelling and pain, and fever during Yin and Shen hours. I diagnosed it as Blood deficiency with hyperactive fire in the Gallbladder Meridian. Her menstruation indeed arrived early. Initially, she took Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) combined with Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) for four doses, after which the fever subsided. Then, Jiawei Siwu Tang (Modified Four Substances Decoction) was used, adding Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), and Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus) each at 5 fen, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Zhi Cao (Prepared Licorice Root) each at 3 fen. After more than twenty doses, the swelling also disappeared. The Huanglian and Shanzhi were then removed, and after another fifty-plus doses, her menstruation became regular and her Yuan Qi (Original Qi) was replenished.
