Unburied corpses may be placed on the floor of a room, on a bed, on open ground in front of or behind a house, or on mountain ridges, stream beds, or amidst vegetation. First, inspect the location where the corpse is positioned, measure the elevation of the surrounding terrain, and record the distance from specific reference points. If within a stream bed, measure the distance from the foot of the mountain or the bank; determine whose land it is; and identify the specific place name. If indoors, determine the exact location and check if there are any objects covering or padding above or below. After completing this survey, the corpse may be removed for examination.
First, remove the clothing worn by the corpse or the jewelry of women, recording each item one by one from the head down to the socks and shoes. Personal luggage should also be listed item by item. After completion, wash the corpse once with warm water (and then proceed) to examine it. Do not immediately use wine or vinegar.
After washing away the rotting clothes, first check if the corpse has military identification numbers? Or the size of characters tattooed on the forehead or face, counting how many lines or characters there are? What type of soldier was it? If it is a person assigned to exile/service, which prefecture were they assigned to? The character "Jun" (Military) must also have its line count recorded. If there are tattooed rings, determine whether they are square or round? Located on the back of the hand or the neck? Count the number as well. Identify which are tattoos or rings? Whether moxibustion was previously performed or drugs used to remove them? If the traces are faint and scarred, take a bamboo comb scraper, scrape the area of the moxibustion, and the marks will become visible.
After distinguishing and verifying the features of people of color (non-Han ethnic groups), examine where on the deceased's body there are tattoos (Diaoqing) or moxibustion scars; distinguish between new and old scabs? Check for pus or blood? Count the total number? Also note new and old scars from official beatings, whether on the back or buttocks; and new and old whip marks from thorny branches, whether on the legs or soles of the feet? Where are the scars from old boils? Where are current lesions? Measure and record the dimensions; and describe all dark marks or similar features in detail. If none exist, state that explicitly.
Measure the length of the corpse? The length of the hair? The age at death?
First, inspect whose land the grave is on? What is the place name? For a single mound of earth, measure its height, length, and width, recording each dimension; and determine under whose roof the corpse is currently temporarily interred? Measure accordingly as described above.
Next, observe the orientation of the corpse's head and feet, such as head east and feet west; measure the distance from the head to specific points, and from the feet to specific points. Apply the same method to left and right directions. Openly dig away the loose soil, or remove the temporary bricks, to see what container or matting holds the corpse, i.e., whether the coffin has lacquer decoration? Whether the mat has borders or padding? Lift out, dismantle, and place the corpse on the ground in a brightly lit area for examination.
