(Attached: Method for Determining Life and Death of Mother and Child)
The *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) states: During the sixth or seventh month of pregnancy, if the pulse is solid, large, firm, strong, wiry, and tight, it indicates survival; if the pulse is deep and fine, it indicates death. A uniform and fine pulse suggests easy delivery, while a large, floating, and slow pulse indicates difficult delivery due to scattered Qi.
The *Mai Jue* (Pulse Rhymes) states: For a woman about to give birth, the pulse deviates from the normal pattern (Li Jing Mai), presenting as deep, fine, and slippery, which is a common sign. Pain felt at midnight should result in delivery by dawn; if not delivered by noon the next day, it is certain she will deliver. (If there is) heavy body, fever, and frequent chills, with black and bluish veins under the tongue, and the tongue rolling back and cold on top, the fetus shall die, and toxins remaining in the abdomen will cause the mother to perish. If the face is red and the tongue is cyanotic, upon careful examination, it is certain that the mother survives but the fetus dies; if the lips and mouth are both cyanotic and foam issues forth, both mother and child die, and all hope should be abandoned; if the face is cyanotic, the tongue is red, and foam issues forth frequently, it is certain that the mother dies but the fetus survives. If you do not believe this, observe these verifiable signs, and the words of sages are not in vain.
Shu Tai Wan (Fetus-Binding Pill): The fetus is small and easy to deliver; take until the time of delivery.
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, pith removed, stir-fried with bran, equal parts).
Grind into powder, make pills using cooked rice, size of Sophora seeds. Enter the last month of pregnancy, take 30-50 pills before meals, wash down with warm water. (Using lotus leaf decoction to cook the rice is better).
Da Sheng San (Great Birth Powder): Take several doses during the eighth or ninth month of pregnancy; it is very good and facilitates easy delivery.
Da Fu Pi (Arecae Pericarpium, 3 qian), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Zi Su Geng Ye (Perillae Caulis et Folium, each 5 fen), Dang Gui Shen Wei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, body and tail), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, each 1 qian), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, processed with honey, 1 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, processed with honey, 2 qian).
Cut into pieces for one dose, add five leaves of green onion and seven Huang Yang Nao (tips of Euonymus japonicus leaves; not needed if appetite is poor and fetus is thin). Decoct in water and take. Alternatively, add Zhi Ke and Sha Ren. In spring, add Chuan Xiong. In summer, add Huang Qin. In autumn, add Ze Xie. In winter, add Sha Ren. For Qi deficiency, double Ren Shen and Bai Zhu. For Qi excess, add Xiang Fu and Chen Pi. For Blood deficiency, add Dang Gui and Di Huang. For robust physique, double Zi Su. For irritable and angry disposition, add Huang Lian and Chai Hu. For excessive heat, add Huang Qin. For damp-phlegm, add Hua Shi and Ban Xia. For food stagnation, add Shan Zha. For hunger after eating, double Huang Yang Nao. For abdominal pain, add Mu Xiang and Guan Gui. (These modifications are excellent).
Another Formula: Take in the ninth month. (This is a variation of Shu Tai Wan; for those with insufficient Qi and Blood, reconsider).
Jiu Qin (Scutellariae Radix, wine-fried, 1 liang; reduce half for weak persons who should not use cold medicines), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, bran-fried), Hua Shi (Talcum, each 7.5 qian; use ten days before term; if urination is frequent, omit this ingredient).
Grind into powder, make pills with congee, size of Sophora seeds. Take 50 pills per dose, wash down with hot water on an empty stomach. Suitable for persons with Qi excess; taking too much may damage Yuan Qi.
Hua Tai Zhi Ke San (Slippery Fetus Aurantium Powder): Suitable for regular use during the seventh or eighth month of pregnancy to facilitate slippery fetus and easy delivery. Princess Huyang had prolonged labor for many deliveries; Daoist Nan Shan presented this formula.
Shang Zhou Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, bran-fried, 2 liang), Fen Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, processed with honey, 1 liang).
Grind into fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose, mix with boiling water, three times a day. (Taking both formulas together is good, but not suitable for Qi deficiency). Wen Yin Ju added Dang Gui and Guang Mu Xiang in equal parts. Scholar Xu stated: Zhi Ke is bitter and cold; taking it alone may cause fetal coldness and fetal pain. It can be assisted by pills of Di Huang and Dang Gui made with honey, named Nei Bu Wan. This is because Zhi Ke San overcomes Qi excessively, while Nei Bu Wan supplements Blood insufficiently.
Nei Bu Wan (Inner Supplement Pill): Treats deficiency of Chong and Ren meridians in pregnancy, supplements Blood and calms the fetus; take alternately with Zhi Ke San.
Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 2 liang), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 liang, slightly fried).
Grind into powder, make pills with refined honey, size of Sophora seeds. Take 30-40 pills per dose, wash down with warm wine or boiling water.
Zhang Shi Fang (Formula of Mr. Zhang): Treats pregnancy where the fetus is fat and obstructive, making movement difficult; take near term to shrink the fetus and facilitate delivery. Also treats various intestinal diseases, directs Qi downward and expands the diaphragm. (Suitable for Qi excess).
Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, 5 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1.5 liang), Xiang Fu Zi (Cyperi Rhizoma, 3 liang, fried and de-hairy).
Grind into powder, mix with ginger juice to take. For men or women with cold Qi attacking and stabbing the hypochondrium causing pain, decoct with three cun of scallion white and take. For women with Spleen cold and Blood-Qi forming masses causing stabbing pain, mix with hot wine and take. For obstruction of urination and defecation, mix with Bai Qian Niu Tang and take. (Qian Niu is too harsh and likely unsuitable for pregnancy and childbirth).
Bao Sheng Wu You San (Protect Life Without Worries Powder): Treats pregnancy where one lives in comfort, dislikes sweet and fatty foods, has unstable emotions, and irregular diet, leading to thick and dense placenta with firm roots; or for thin persons with little Blood and weak fetus, causing difficult labor near term. Take in the last month to facilitate easy birth.
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, bran-fried), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, processed with honey, each 1.5 qian), Ru Xiang (Olibanum, ground separately), Xue Yu (Calamitatis Capitis Humani Carbonized, ground separately, each 5 fen).
Combine as one dose, decoct in water, add Ru Xiang and Xue Yu, mix evenly, take at any time.
Shen Qin Wan (Divine Sleep Pill): Slims the fetus, makes it slippery and easy to deliver; takes divine effect when taken one month before term. (Only suitable for persons with abundant Qi, so can be taken near term).
Tong Ming Ru Xiang (Olibanum, clear and bright, 0.5 liang, ground separately), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, bran-fried, 1 liang).
Grind into powder, make pills with refined honey, size of Sophora seeds. Take 30 pills per dose, wash down with wine on an empty stomach.
