Quan Da (General Collection) states: During pregnancy, if the body is emaciated or complicated by diseases, leading to deficiency and damage of the Zang-Fu organs, and exhaustion of Qi and Blood, the fetus cannot be nourished. This results in fetal movement instability and lack of firmness. If the fetus ultimately cannot be secured, abortion may be induced to prevent harm to the pregnant woman.
Xue Ji (Mr. Xue) stated: The aforementioned syndrome should be treated according to the formulas and discussions in the "Lumbar, Abdominal, and Back Pain Section." Only when the fetus is truly unsaveable should one consider inducing abortion; extreme caution is required!
When Lord Xu Shaowei, Grand Censor, served as the magistrate of Jintan, his wife suffered from Tai Lou (threatened miscarriage with vaginal bleeding). Despite treatment, it did not stop. With the deadline for official assessment approaching, Lord Xu wished to follow the pathological trend to induce abortion and sought my advice. I simply instructed him to administer Foshou San (Buddha's Hand Powder), stating that if the fetus could be saved, so be it; if not, let it pass, following nature. After several doses, Lord Xu remained anxious and hesitant. A female gynecologist reviewed the prescription and suggested using Niu Xi (Achyranthes Root) one qian, decocted in wine. She claimed, "Niu Xi is essentially a tonic for the lower part of the body; what harm could it do?" Lord Xu believed her and administered it, and the fetus was indeed expelled. At that time, I was mourning the death of my mother and was unaware of this incident. When I learned of it and rushed to arrive, I smelled strong aromas of Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) and She Xiang (Musk) filling the hall. It turned out that because the placenta had not been expelled, the female doctor had further prescribed Xiang Gui San (Fragrant Cinnamon Powder). Consequently, blood gushed forth violently like a bursting river, impossible to stop. An urgent decoction of Dushen Tang (Single Ginseng Decoction) was prepared, but before it was ready, she passed away. After Lord Xu's grief subsided slightly, he came to thank me and asked, "Niu Xi is a tonic, yet it causes abortion. Why?" I replied, "Raw Niu Xi has a dispersing and promoting action, while cooked Niu Xi has a tonifying action (The theory of 'raw disperses heat and tonifies' seems plausible but is actually incorrect; please reflect on this). Therefore, breaking blood and replenishing essence are mutually exclusive, like arrowheads facing each other. Is it only Niu Xi that acts this way? Lu Jiao (Deer Antler) can also cause abortion and break blood, but when decocted into Bai Jiao (similar to E-Jiao), it secures the fetus and stops bleeding. Mistaking the raw properties based on familiarity with the cooked properties is what we call a crude practitioner (incompetent physician). Lord Xu sighed in regret endlessly. I have specially recorded this as a warning to the world.
Guixin San (Cinnamon Heart Powder): Treats cases where pregnancy is complicated by illness, making the fetus unstable, allowing for abortion.
Ingredients: Guixin (Cinnamon Heart), Gualou (Trichosanthes Fruit), Niu Xi (Achyranthes Root), Qumai (Dianthus Herb) (each 5 fen); Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root) (1 qian).
Preparation: Coarsely crush the herbs, decoct in water, and take orally.
Another formula: Use only Niu Xi (Achyranthes Root) one liang, decocted in one zhong of wine until reduced to seven-tenths. Divide into two doses.
Qianjin Shenzao Tang: In women, if the pulse at Yin and Yang positions is both vigorous, it is called Shuang Qu (twins). If the Shaoyin pulse is slightly tight, the blood becomes turbid and coagulated. Due to insufficient nourishment via the menses, one fetus may die prematurely while the other survives alone. If the dead fetus is not removed, it will endanger the mother and result in the loss of the living fetus. This formula treats this condition.
Ingredients: Xiezhua (Crab Claws) (1 sheng), Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin) (3 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root) (2 liang).
Preparation: Coarsely crush the herbs. Take ten dou of flowing water from the east. First decoct Xiezhua and Gancao until reduced to three sheng. Strain to remove dregs, add Ejiao and melt it. Take all at once. If unable to consume all at once, divide into two doses. (Note: Ejiao secures the fetus, Xiezhua breaks blood stasis, and Gancao harmonizes the middle jiao. They work together without conflict; how miraculous.)
Xitai Fang (Abortion Formula): Treats pregnant mothers whose fetuses are unstable due to disease, allowing for abortion.
Method 1: Take Si Mian (Qu made on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month) (referred to as Qu in Quan Da) four liang. Add two large zhan of water, decoct to obtain one zhan and three-tenths. Filter through silk cloth to remove dregs. Divide into three warm doses. The fetus will be expelled immediately.
Another method: Take Da Qu (Large Qu) five sheng, decoct with one dou of clear wine for two boils. Strain to remove dregs. Divide into five doses. Do not eat food overnight after taking. Upon subsequent dosing, the fetus will turn into mush, and the mother will suffer no distress. This is a secret recipe of Qianjin Hospital.
Another method: Mai Ya (Sprouted Barley) (Mai Ya can break blood) one sheng, ground into powder. Mix with water and decoct to two sheng. Take orally; expulsion occurs immediately. Highly effective.
Another method: Take two Fu Zi (Aconite Lateral Root) pieces, grind into powder. Mix with pure sour vinegar and apply to the right foot. Remove after application; effect is excellent.
Another method: Take one chicken egg. Place salt measured by three fingers into the egg. Consume orally; expulsion occurs immediately.
Commentary: Chen Liangfu listed formulas such as Niuxi Tang and Guixin San, but Lou Quanshan did not adopt them, selecting only these few formulas instead. His insight was indeed outstanding.
