Zi He said: When Dai Ren passed through Qiao, he met a soldier who recounted the story of his divorcing his wife. Dai Ren asked for the reason. The soldier replied, "When my wife was still a maiden, she had a cold accumulation in the epigastrium, resembling an inverted cup; upon pressure, it produced a sound like water, and when warmed by hot hands, it felt as cold as ice. I have been married to her for fifteen years, and I fear it will cut off my lineage, which is why I cast her away." Dai Ren said, "Do not divorce her. If you use my medicine, the disease can be eliminated, and pregnancy can be achieved (since the pulse corresponds to the pathology, the disease can be cured, and offspring obtained)." The soldier followed his advice. Dai Ren examined her pulse, finding it deep and slow, but the chi position was surging, large, and forceful, which is not a sign of infertility; she could conceive within a year. Her husband laughed and said, "Let us try." First, San Sheng San (Three Holy Powders) was used to induce vomiting, expelling one dou of saliva, after which the epigastrium became flat and soft. Then, Bai Zhu Tiao Zhong Tang (Atractylodes Macrocephala Decoction for Regulating the Middle) and Wu Ling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) were administered, followed by Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) to harmonize. Within less than a month, qi and blood were balanced, and within several months, she conceived and bore a son. Dai Ren once said, "Using this method of mine, there are no women who cannot bear children." This statement is not false. (San Sheng San consists of Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), Gua Di (Melon Seed), each 3 liang, and Li Lu (Veratrum Root) 1 liang, ground into coarse powder, decocted with vinegar juice; see *Ru Men Shi Qin* for detailed preparation methods. Bai Zhu Tiao Zhong Tang consists of Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Fu Ling (Poria), Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome), Ju Hong (Tangerine Peel) each 0.5 liang, Gan Cao (Licorice Root) 1 liang, Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), Guan Gui (Cinnamon Bark), Sha Ren (Amomum Fruit), Huo Xiang (Patchouli) each 2.5 qian, ground into powder, dissolved in boiling water, taken with honey, 2 qian per dose, at any time.) The wife of the Magistrate of Yangxia suffered from Fei Qi (Hypochondriac Mass), initially the size of a wine cup, accompanied by alternating chills and fever, lasting for over fifteen years. Later, due to irritability and grief, the condition worsened significantly. Only an area about three finger-widths wide in the epigastrium was free of disease; the rest of the abdomen was hard as a stone slab, preventing sitting or lying down. Acupuncture and moxibustion treatments had been exhausted in vain. She invited Dai Ren to diagnose her. Dai Ren said, "This is Fei Qi, contracted on a Wuji day in late summer, located under the left hypochondrium, resembling an inverted cup. If untreated for long, it causes malaria." Guadisan (Gua Di Powder) was used to induce vomiting, expending approximately one or two cans of fishy-smelling yellow phlegm. (Fishy yellow phlegm can generate damp-heat; the method is effective and decisive.) That night, Zhou Che Wan (Boat Cart Pill) and Tong Jing San (Unblocking Collaterals Powder) were administered. At dawn (wugeng hour), five to six bowel movements consisting of half yellow phlegm and half pus-like fluid were expelled. All areas where accumulation existed felt painful. Afterwards, Bai Zhu San (Atractylodes Powder) and Dang Gui San (Angelica Sinensis Powder) and other herbs to harmonize blood flow and regulate meridians were used. Through such emetic and purgative treatments, she was cured after three sessions. (Guadisan and Zhouche Wan formulas are found in the sections on miscellaneous diseases, food stagnation, phlegm, and fluid retention. Tongjing San consists of Ju Hong (Tangerine Peel), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), and Gan Sui (Kansui Root). The Kansui is wrapped in flour to prevent water penetration, boiled for over a hundred times, soaked in cold water, dried, and removed from the flour. The three ingredients are in equal parts, ground into fine powder, taken 3 qian per dose, mixed with warm light wine before bed. Baizhu San consists of Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), and Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) in equal parts, ground into powder, taken 2-3 qian per dose, decocted in water, taken before meals. Danggui San consists of Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) and Du Ji Li (Tribulus Fruit) in equal parts, ground into powder, taken with rice drink, before meals. This case combines emesis and purgation. Note that Gan Sui and similar herbs are too harsh for draining water; users must exercise caution.)
