[Preface by Zhou Shouzhong]
In the autumn of the 15th year of the Republic of China (1926), while residing as a guest in the military garrison of Zhicheng, I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Wang Songru (Wang Dexuan) from Xiangxiang. He possessed a dignified bearing and elegant demeanor, and our conversation resonated harmoniously. At that time, Mr. Wang served as the Director of Salt Administration for Ningxiang County, concurrently holding the positions of Junior Major Quartermaster and equivalent Military Medical Officer for the 25th Regiment of the 8th Army. He managed administrative affairs with meticulous planning and clear organization. When soldiers, officers, and local civilians fell ill and sought his medical attention, the influx was so great that door thresholds were worn through. Yet, he responded with composure, never pausing for rest, and achieved remarkable curative effects in many cases. Consequently, everyone revered him as if he were a deity. Subsequently, he traveled through the Jianghan region and practiced medicine in Yandu (Beijing). Local dignitaries, high-ranking officials, as well as women and children from remote villages, hearing of his reputation, gathered to seek his diagnosis. For all chronic and stubborn diseases, he achieved miraculous recoveries upon initiating treatment. By the 21st year of the Republic (1932), scarlet fever spread rampant in Beiping. While other physicians were at a loss, Mr. Wang saved numerous lives, accumulating case records that formed volumes. This success stemmed from his extensive reading and profound diligence; his prescriptions were not bound by rigid conventions, allowing him to act with ease and proficiency, returning with honor. In the current year, Mr. Wang assumed the position of Professor of Warm Diseases at the Hunan National Medical Specialized School. Sensing that there had long been no authoritative text on Warm Diseases, he specifically collected ancient and modern medical literature, elucidated its profound mysteries, expressed his own insights, traced issues to their origins and followed them to their conclusions, and synthesized these into a book titled *Wenbing Zhengzong* (Orthodox Treatise on Warm Diseases). Although I am not versed in medicine, I deeply appreciate the excellence of Mr. Wang’s medical skills and the wonder of his cures. It is evident that his book deserves significant recognition in the world. Therefore, prior to its publication, I have outlined its general overview.

[Autobiographical Preface by Wang Dexuan]
Confucius asserted that governance must begin with the rectification of names. If names are not correct, language is not in accordance with truth; if language is not in accordance with truth, affairs cannot be accomplished. Medicine wields the power over life and death; how can it neglect the rectification of its nomenclature? The reason Chinese medicine differs from Western medicine lies in our emphasis on Qi transformation (Qihua), whereas they emphasize physical structure and substance; they rely on scientific demonstration, while we seek philosophical principles. Because we emphasize Qi transformation and seek philosophical principles, some aspects cannot be fully conveyed through words but must be understood through intuitive insight. What can be verbally transmitted is indeed easy to understand and practice; however, what requires intuitive insight is difficult to comprehend and master. To truly perceive the essence beyond the wall (a metaphor for profound understanding), one must possess unique perceptiveness. The misnomer regarding "Warm Diseases" has existed for a long time. If left to remain chaotic and confused, I fear that a slight error in the beginning could lead to a massive deviation later. Mr. Songru has harbored this concern for a long time. This spring, having temporarily taken up the teaching chair at the Hunan National Medical Specialized School to instruct in Warm Disease studies, I did not hesitate despite my limited learning. I collected and compiled theories on Warm Diseases from both ancient and modern sources, corrected and clarified them, and named this work *Wenbing Zhengzong*.
Since the school has already adopted Shen Xiaogu’s adaptation of Shi Yiren’s *Quanwen Bing Shu* (Complete Book of Warm Diseases) as the curriculum, this manuscript is provided merely for student reference. Thus, complying with their request, I hastily submitted it for printing, lacking full confidence, and hope that experts will offer guidance.
