7. Cancer patients often present with no obvious signs before the onset of the disease. Generally, it is only through hospital examinations that they discover they have cancer. At this time, a sense of fear often arises: the belief that "cancer equals death," or that death is imminent. In fact, this is not so; cancer does not equal death. For example, Li Muyuan, a lay Buddhist practitioner, upon discovering he had leukemia, did not feel fear. Knowing that the ultimate outcome was death, he put aside all his work and went to a temple to prepare for Wangsheng (Buddhist term for peaceful passing). He performed various chores in the temple and waited for more than ten years, thinking, "Why hasn't Amitabha Buddha come to take me yet?" Consequently, all clinical symptoms disappeared. A hospital examination revealed a miracle: the cancer cells were gone. This was, of course, the result of believing in and practicing Buddhism.
8. The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: "All pain and sores/ulcers belong to the Heart." Most sores and ulcers are attributed to Fire pathogen and should be treated with methods to clear heat and detoxify. However, in clinical practice, one may also observe aspects of "Fire deficiency" (i.e., Yang deficiency). One case is cited here to illustrate this. An elderly surnamed Hao first developed a sore at the Weili point (BL31) this March, presenting with redness, swelling, and unbearable pain. Western medicine treated him with penicillin for two weeks, resulting in recovery. Subsequently, sores appeared successively on his lips and buttocks, rising and falling in turn. Other physicians treated him with heat-clearing and detoxifying herbs, but without effect; the condition worsened. Out of desperation, he sought my treatment. I palpated his pulse as deep, fine, slow, and choppy. Upon inquiry, I found his urine clear and profuse, his stool loose and unformed, and his whole body felt constricted as if wearing a tight band (a metaphor for severe constriction/pain). This patient had suffered from diabetes mellitus for nearly twenty years and had worked as a barefoot doctor for over ten years. Based on his pulse and symptoms, the diagnosis was: Kidney Yang insufficiency with floating Yang (deficient Yang floating outward due to inability to remain anchored internally).
Prescription: Chuan Fuzi (Sichuan Aconite Root, milky white slices) 50g, Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome) 150g, Shengcong (Raw Scallion Stem) 3 stalks, Rougui (Cinnamon Bark) 15 pieces. Six doses, decocted in water and taken orally.
After taking the medicine, the heads of the sores began to atrophy, and the pain gradually decreased. After taking a total of more than 20 doses, he recovered completely.
Analysis of the Formula: This formula is originally Baizhong Tang (White Passage Decoction) with modifications. In this formula, Ganjiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome) is replaced by Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome). Shengjiang is pungent, spicy, and juicy; it can generate fluids and quench thirst, and disperse stagnation, with efficacy surpassing that of Ganjiang. Adding Rougui (Cinnamon Bark) serves to guide fire back to its source (leading the floating fire back to the Kidney).
