〔 曰〕凡使以酒润，去核取皮，一斤只取四两以来，缓火熬干方用。能壮元气，秘精
其核能滑精，不可服。

〔 曰〕入药，用水调侧柏子末，安瓷锅中，置琥珀于内煮之，从巳至申，当有异光，
捣粉筛用。
〔 曰〕采得，铜刀削去粗皮，薄切，以东流水浸一夜。至明漉出，细切，以升麻叶对
蒸一日，去叶，晒干用。〔时珍曰〕猪苓取其行湿，生用更佳。
【雷斅曰】凡是使用山茱萸，需用酒润湿，去掉果核只取果皮，一斤药材只能取出四两以上的皮，用慢火熬干后方可使用。它能壮补元气，固涩精气。其果核能导致滑精，不可服用。
【雷斅曰】先用水浸泡，去掉外皮和尖端，用生蜜浸泡一夜，滤出后阴干，研磨成膏状使用。

【李时珍曰】寻常用法只需去掉薄膜打碎即可使用。

[Lei Xiao said] When using Cornus Officinalis Fructus (Shanzhuyu, 山茱萸), moisten it with wine, remove the core, and use only the peel. From one jin (approx. 500g) of material, no more than four liang (approx. 200g) of peel should be obtained. Slowly dry it over low heat before use. It can strengthen primordial Qi (Yuanqi, 元气) and secure essence (Jing, 精). The core can cause seminal emission (Huajing, 滑精) and must not be taken.
[Lei Xiao said] First soak in water, remove the skin and tips, then soak in raw honey overnight. Drain and dry in the shade, then grind into a paste for use.
[Lei Xiao said] After harvesting, use only the arrowhead-shaped parts. Wipe off the red hairs, mix with animal butter (Su, 酥), and stir-fry slowly. For every one liang of material, use two and a half qian of butter.
[Lei Xiao said] When using the root, after digging it up, soak it in flowing water from the east, brush off the soil, beat to remove the heart/core, soak in decoction of cooked Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草) overnight, and bake dry for use.
[Li Shizhen said] When using the seeds, select clean branches and stems, choose those with bright color, wash them, moisten with wine overnight, crush thoroughly, and add to medicinal preparations.
[Li Shizhen said] Method of extraction: Use newly harvested Vitex Negundo Stem (Jingjie, 荆茎 - *Note: Context suggests a specific stem, likely referring to a plant used for extracting juice or resin*), cut into segments of one chi five cun long. Place across two bricks and roast over fire in the middle. Catch the dripping juice at both ends with vessels.
[Lei Xiao said] When using, remove the white membrane under the calyx. Soak in wine for one shichen (12 hours), steam from Si hour to Wei hour, then sun-dry for use.
[Li Shizhen said] Ordinarily, one only needs to remove the membrane and crush it for use.
[Lei Xiao said] When using, select cleanly, soak in wine overnight, drain and let dry. Mix with honey to moisten, steam from Mao hour to You hour, sun-dry, then mix with honey again and steam. Repeat this process three times, finally sun-drying for use. For every one liang of material, use eight liang of wine and half a liang of honey.
[Lei Xiao said] Upon harvest, coarsely crush. For every one liang, use five qian of butter, stir-fry together until dry, then use in medicine.
[Lei Xiao said] When using, remove skin and heart, crush finely. Stir in a basin of water; filter out floating impurities. These are the red fibers of Poria Cocos (Fuling, 茯苓). If mistakenly ingested, it causes small spots on the pupil and cornea, and may lead to blindness.
[Tao Hongjing said] When preparing pills and powders, boil for two or three boils first, then cut, dry in the sun, and use.
[Lei Xiao said] For medicinal use, mix Powder of Platycladi Semen (Cebai Zi, 侧柏子) with water, place in a porcelain pot, put Amber (Hupo, 琥珀) inside, and boil from Si hour to Shen hour. There should be an unusual light. Grind into powder, sieve, and use.
[Lei Xiao said] Upon harvest, scrape off the coarse bark with a copper knife, slice thinly, and soak in flowing water from the east overnight. The next day, drain, slice finely, steam with leaves of Cimicifuga Rhizome (Shengma, 升麻) for one day, remove the leaves, sun-dry, and use.
[Li Shizhen said] Polyporus Umbellatus (Zhuling, 猪苓) is used to promote urination and leach out dampness; raw use is better.
