[Li Shizhen stated] For medicinal use, boil in vinegar broth for twenty boiling cycles, immerse in cold water, knead and pull dozens of times, then dry in the sun for use.
[Su Song stated] Ru Xiang (Frankincense) has a highly viscous nature and is difficult to grind. When using it, hang it in a silk bag at a window crevice for a long time before grinding; this prevents stickiness. [Meng Shen stated] For use in Wan pills (Pellets) and San powders, some say to use hot water... (text missing here).
The processing method is the same as that of Ru Xiang (Frankincense).
[An unnamed physician stated] For use, first grind into powder, sieve it, and add it to Wan pills or San powders. If pounded together with other herbs, it will turn into dust and fly away.
[Zhen Quan stated] Long Nao Xiang (Borneol), when stored with Nuomi Tan (Rice Charcoal) and Xiangsi Zi (Abrus Precatorius seeds), will not be consumed or lost. [Li Shizhen stated] Some say to put chicken feathers and Xiangsi Zi (Abrus Precatorius seeds) together into a small porcelain jar to distinguish authenticity.
[Li Shizhen stated] For use, take one tael of Borneol, cover with two bowls, seal the mouth with wet paper, and heat with alternating Wen fire (mild heat) and Wu fire (strong heat) for about half an hour. Remove and let cool completely before use. Another method: For every one tael of Borneol, use Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) and Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) 6 qian, Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) and Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) 4 qian, Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Spica) and Mi Meng Hua (Glochidion Flower) 2 qian, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Huai Hua (Sophorae Flos) 1 qian. Boil until the water dries up, then open; the Borneol will naturally sublimate to the top. Sweep it down with a feather; its shape resembles pine resin, suitable for eye medicines treating Wind-Heat. People often mix counterfeit Borneol, so distinction is essential.
[An unnamed physician stated] For use with Bo Pi (Phellodendri Cortex), scrape off the rough bark, soak in raw honey water for half a day, drain and dry, coat with honey, and roast with alternating Wen fire and Wu fire until the honey is fully absorbed. For every five taels of Bo Pi, use three taels of honey. [Zhang Yuansu stated] The dual processing methods treat the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner); single processing treats the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner); unprocessed treats the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner). [Li Shizhen stated] Honey-processing targets the Middle Jiao.
[An unnamed physician stated] For use, select those that are purple and pungent in taste as superior; scrape off the rough bark. For use in Wan pills and San powders, for every one jin, use four taels of Su You (Butter/Ghee), roast until cooked. If used in Decoctions, use eight taels of natural Ginger Juice, roast until fully absorbed. [Meng Shen stated] For medicinal use, remove the rough bark, roast with Ginger Juice, or soak and stir-fry. [Chen Cheng stated] The taste...
[An unnamed physician stated] For use, scrape off the rough bark. For every one jin, use one tael of Su You (Butter/Ghee) and three taels of honey, mix and coat, then roast over fire until fully absorbed. Finely chop before use.
