Indicated for all sprains and contusions, pain in various joints, and conditions caused by cold-dampness where the patient fears acupuncture. The prescription is as follows:
Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Ruxiang (Olibanum), Yichen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (each 3 qian), Shexiang (Moschus) (a small amount), Qi Ai (Artemisiae Argyi Folium prepared from Anhui) (2 liang).
Take half a chi of cotton paper, first lay the Mugwort and Artemisiae Scopariae Herba on it, then sprinkle the powders of the aforementioned herbs on top, roll it extremely tightly, and store for use.
Press to locate the painful acupoint, mark it with a pen, and place six or seven layers of paper over the acupoint externally. Ignite the rolled herb using the true fire of the sun; either a convex lens or a concave mirror can be used to ignite it until red-hot (igniting with a lamp or candle is also acceptable). Press the ignited end onto the acupoint, leave it there for a considerable time, then remove it. Trim off the ash, re-ignite, and press again. Repeat this nine times, and the condition will be cured.
For each moxibustion session, recite the incantation once. First, ignite the herb, and recite the incantation:
"Generals of Thunder, Star Lord of Fire Virtue, may the medicine achieve miraculous efficacy, aided by the spirits of the Three Realms and Six Fu-organs. The needle hides fierce flames, refined at the Nine-Turn Gate of the Immortal Capital. Eliminate pain and disaster, sweep away demonic miasma. I invoke the authority of the Southern Dipper Six Stars and the Supreme Venerable Lord. Execute swiftly according to the law."
After reciting the incantation, immediately perform moxibustion on the acupoint using the Thunder-Fire Needle.
This method was created by Sun Simiao (Master Sun) and has been passed down to the present day, proving quite effective. During the preparation of the medicine, ensure that women, chickens, and dogs do not see it. This prescription is recorded in *Zhenjiu Daquan* (Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion).
Additionally, according to *Yuzuan Yijia Jinjian* (Imperial Compilation of the Golden Mirror of Medicine), there is a formula for Thunder-Fire Divine Needle, which uses only three ingredients. The rhyme states:
"Thunder-Fire Divine Needle attacks cold-dampness, suitable for piercing bone abscess pain; Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), Shexiang (Moschus), Er Xiang (two fragrances) together with Qi Ai (Mugwort); igniting the needle at the painful site yields miraculous efficacy."
Jingyue's New Formulas also contains two formulas, noted for treating qi stagnation due to wind-cold-damp-toxicity lingering in the meridians, causing pain and swelling that cannot dissipate. One involves taking the bark of peach branches growing eastward on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, cutting them one to two cun long, sharpening both ends like chicken egg tips, igniting them over a lamp, and then pressing the needle against several layers of paper placed over the affected area for moxibustion. Another method shares the same ingredients and technique as Taiyi Divine Needle, except for the addition of Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix). Although named differently, they share the same therapeutic efficacy in treating diseases.
