Sun Simiao stated: After moxibustion on this acupoint (Gohuangshu, BL 43), the body's Yang Qi will become robust and vigorous. One should carefully adjust and nourish oneself to achieve physical recovery. The method of nourishment involves consuming warm, soft soups and rice, avoiding overeating, and refraining from ingesting raw, cold, greasy, sticky, or slippery foods, as well as goose meat, pork, fish, shrimp, bamboo shoots, bracken fern, and other substances that may trigger Qi stagnation or wind pathogens. Additionally, one must avoid exposure to Wind, Cold, Summerheat, and Dampness, and should not engage in sexual activity merely because Yang Qi temporarily surges. If Qi stagnation is felt, moxibustion can be applied to any one of the four acupoints below the umbilicus: Qihai (CV 6), Dantian (CV 12), Guanyuan (CV 4), or Zhongji (CV 3). Furthermore, Zusanli (ST 36) should be moxaed to guide Fire Qi downward and tonify the lower body. Depending on the depth of the disease, with time and proper recuperation, full recovery can be ensured. Otherwise, it is like relying on a single piece of wood to support a collapsing mansion; if the condition recurs and treatment is abandoned, the outcome will be death, akin to that of the Marquis of Jin, which is not the fault of moxibustion.
I encountered the chaos of the Jin barbarians in Xuchang, enduring worry, toil, and danger while traveling eastward through harsh weather. In the eighth month of the Dingwei year, upon arriving at Sibin, I contracted malaria. Upon reaching Qin Chuan, improper medical treatment caused my Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi to deteriorate and deplete. By late spring of the following year, I still suffered severely from abdominal swelling and distension, shortness of breath, inability to eat, profuse diarrhea, heavy limbs, and flaccidity of the legs, requiring a cane to stand. Later, assisted by the family of Chen Leweng, I received specialized moxibustion on Gohuangshu (BL 43). From the Dinghai year to the Guisi year, a total of three hundred moxa cones were applied. The day after moxibustion, my chest Qi stabilized, swelling subsided, diarrhea ceased, and appetite returned. In the Jiawu year, I was able to travel by sedan chair for visits. Subsequently, another hundred cones were applied, leading to a gradual reduction of symptoms until complete health was restored. Witnessing this remarkable efficacy among relatives and friends, several others underwent moxibustion, curing their chronic ailments. Sun Simiao said: "If one diligently seeks the correct acupoint and applies moxibustion, no disease remains incurable." This statement is indeed true. Therefore, I examined discrepancies in medical classics, consulted various schools of thought, and incorporated my personal trials. From measuring cun distances to methods of post-treatment care, I divided the content into ten chapters, accompanied by illustrations of body posture, finger flexion/extension, sitting, and standing in each chapter. This aims to facilitate understanding for readers, preventing unjust errors, and to further spread Sun Simiao’s benevolent intent to save people through accurate acupoint selection throughout the world.
