(This refers to fresh clams. Those with patterns excreted in the feces of geese after consumption are Wen Ge (Wen Clam), while those without patterns are Hai Ge (Sea Clam). Locals often counterfeit Hai Ge using rotten clam shells from the coastline that have been polished smooth by wind and waves. For processing one liang of Hai Ge, boil it in浆 water (fermented grain liquid) for one shi (two hours). Then add two liang each of Digupi (Cortex Lycii) and Baiye (Cupressi Cacumen), and boil again for one shi. Finally, rinse three times in running water from the east, dry thoroughly, finely crush, and grind into powder. Shuqi (Radix Daturae Meteloidis) is its guiding drug. It is incompatible with Goudan (Dog Gallbladder), Gansui (Radix Euphorbiae Kansui), and Yuanhua (Flos Genkwanis).)
(The processing method is the same as that of Hai Ge.)
(Also known as Wuyu or Heiyu. Among all fish, only the gallbladder of this species is edible.)
(The larvae should not be eaten with pork; eating them with sugar causes pinworms; eating them with mustard greens causes swelling; eating them with pig liver, chicken meat, pheasant meat, deer meat, or monkey meat causes carbuncles; eating them with Menmendong (Radix Ophiopogonis) is harmful to humans.)
(Those made from pig trotters are best; those made from rat feet are inferior. Roast until crisp and grind into powder for use.)
(Treats swelling: apply a paste mixed with vinegar and water externally. Treats sores: decoct for external washing. For internal medicinal use, roast before use. Incompatible with Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), Danshen (Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), and Muli (Concha Ostreae).)
(Clean mud with boiling water, remove head, feet, and wings. Use the whole insect for attacking toxins.)
(When using Ougegu (Cuttlefish Bone), select intact pieces with longitudinal grains. Soak and boil in blood brine for one shi. Remove and place under the eaves. Dig a pit capable of holding the quantity of Cuttlefish Bone used. Burn out charcoal ash in the pit, place the medicine inside, leave overnight until dawn, then remove. This method doubles the efficacy. Incompatible with Baiji (Rhizoma Bletillae), Bailian (Rhizoma Trichosanthis), Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata).)
(Roast to remove wings and feet before use.)
(Modern physicians mostly use Canche Zhi (Silkworm Cast Skin), whereas Eastern physicians use the skin shed by silkworms when they are about to spin cocoons. Although their uses differ slightly, the material used by Easterners is considered authentic and should be lightly roasted.)
(When processing silkworms, remove silk floss and eggs. Soak all in rice washing water overnight. When the serous fluid secreted by the silkworms floats on the surface like snail slime, strain them out. Dry over low fire, wipe clean the yellow flesh, hairs, black mouthparts, and claws with cloth. Grind alone and sieve into powder. The white variety that breaks cleanly with an asphalt-like color is superior. Incompatible with Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis), Fuling (Poria), Fushen (Poria cum Radix), Bixie (Rhizoma Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae), and Sangpiaoxiao (Ootheca Mantidis).)
(Refers to Yan You (Slug). Feared by salt.)
(This refers to the shell-bearing slug. Crush raw for administration; roast for inclusion in prescriptions. Feared by salt.)
(Also known as Dibie (Ground Beetle). Found in damp soil under house walls. It is an essential herb for treating Shanghan (Cold Damage), fractures, and eliminating Nuomu (Malaria Splenomegaly). It promotes blood circulation to resolve stasis. Feared by Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus), Changpu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii), and Wuyou (likely referring to a specific plant or substance associated with houses).)
