Ju Fang Qi Qi Tang (Seven-Emotion Qi Decoction from the Standard Formulary) treats Qi stagnation of the seven emotions (joy, anger, worry, pensiveness, sadness, fear, and fright) condensed in the chest and abdomen, resulting in colicky pain in the heart and abdomen.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Zhigancao (Prepared Licorice Root), Rougui (Cinnamon Twig) (each 1.5 qian), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) (1 qian).
The above herbs are cut into small pieces, decocted in water, and taken orally.
Commentary: This prescription originates from the Taiyang (Greater Yang) pattern example. Cold causes Qi to contract; therefore, it is appropriate to use acrid herbs to disperse and sweet herbs to moderate, treating Qi deficiency with cold stagnation.
Yan Jian San (Salt-Fried Powder) treats all types of Cold Qi attacking and rushing to the chest and hypochondrium, causing unceasing stabbing pain, as well as vomiting and diarrhea due to Spleen and Stomach deficiency-cold.
Sharen (Amomum Fruit), Zhigancao (Prepared Licorice Root), Fuling (Poria), Caoguo (Tsaoko Cardamom Fruit), Roudoukou (Nutmeg), Chuanxiong (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome), Huixiang (Fennel Fruit), Chengqie (Litsea Fruit), Mai (Wheat), Binglang (Areca Seed), Liangjiang (Galangal Rhizome), Zhiqiao (Bitter Orange Fruit), Houpo (Magnolia Bark) (stir-fried), Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Cangzhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) (each in equal proportions).
The above herbs are cut into small pieces. For each dose of 4–5 qian, add a small amount of salt and decoct.
Commentary: This prescription consists of herbs belonging to the Foot-Taiyang, Foot-Yangming, and Foot-Taiyin meridians.
Muxiang Liuqi Yin (Costus Flowing-Qi Infusion) treats various forms of Qi obstruction and blockage, chest and diaphragmatic distension, puffy swelling of the face and eyes, and fullness/swelling of the four limbs.
Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Houpo (Magnolia Bark), Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel), Zisu (Perilla Leaf), Xiangfuzi (Cyperus Rhizome), Gancao (Licorice Root) (each 1 qian), Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel) (2 qian), Gui (Cinnamon Twig), Ezhu (Curcuma Rhizome), Dingpi (Cloves), Dafupi (Betel Nut Husk), Binglang (Areca Seed), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Muxiang (Costus Root), Caoguo (Tsaoko Cardamom Fruit) (each 0.6 qian), Mutong (Akebia Stem) (0.8 qian), Huoxiang (Patchouli Herb), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root) (each 0.4 qian), Fuling (Poria), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Mugua (Chaenomeles Fruit), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Shichangpu (Acorus Rhizome).
The above herbs are cut into small pieces. For each dose of 4–5 qian, add fresh ginger and jujube, then decoct.
Commentary: This prescription belongs to the Taiyang (Greater Yang) pattern examples, similar to the aforementioned formulas. It is included here because it is widely used by the general public. However, due to its aromatic and drying nature, it should not be used for non-cold patterns or cases of excess Qi.
Miszhuan Jiangqi Tang (Secretly Transmitted Descending-Qi Decoction) treats upper excess and lower deficiency, where Qi fails to ascend and descend, leading to dizziness and vertigo of the head and eyes, phlegm-solidity with retching and reversal, and discomfort in the chest and diaphragm.
Gusuibu (Drynaria Rhizome), Hezi (Chebula Fruit), Caoguo (Tsaoko Cardamom Fruit), Wujia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root) (each 0.5 qian), Sangbaipi (Mulberry Root Bark) (2 qian), Digupi (Lycium Root Bark), Zhiqiao (Bitter Orange Fruit), Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Gancao (Licorice Root) (each 1 qian).
The preparation method is found in Ju Fang (Standard Formulary).
Commentary: This prescription originates from the Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) pattern example. However, anger causes Qi to rise upward, and fright causes Qi to become chaotic; the intent lies in seeking understanding through these principles.
Yijian Renshen Su Yin (Simple Ginseng and Perilla Infusion)
See the "Hot Topics" section for the formula.
Respectfully noted: The six Qi (wind, cold, summer heat, dampness, dryness, fire) of Heaven and Earth, combined with human Qi, form pathological patterns and treatment examples, which are also detailed in various categories. Therefore, they should be treated separately.
Dongyuan Shengyang Shunqi Tang (Dongyuan's Ascending-Yang and Smooth-Qi Decoction) treats injuries caused by the seven emotions, as well as fullness, oppression, and shortness of breath due to overwork and irregular diet.
Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel) (each 1 qian), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Renshen (Ginseng Radix) (each 1 qian), Huangqi (Astragalus Root) (4 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark) (each 0.5 qian), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root) (1 qian), Caodoukou (Black Cardamom Fruit), Shenqu (Medicated Leaven) (stir-fried, 1.5 qian).
The above herbs are cut into small pieces. For each dose of 0.5 liang, add fresh ginger and decoct.
Commentary: This is a tonifying prescription. However, fear causes Qi to sink downward; the intent lies in seeking understanding through these principles.
