Gu Shicheng stated: Bleeding from both eyes in adults is caused by excessive fire in the Heart and Liver meridians; it is appropriate to cool the Heart and clear the Liver, after which the bleeding will naturally stop. In children, it is caused by fetal fire and Liver heat; it is appropriate to cool the Liver and guide the Heart fire downward (Dao Chi), while simultaneously feeding them soup made from simmered crucian carp, which will prove effective.

Shen Douyuan stated: After smallpox, children suffer from swelling of both eye lids, approximately one cun above the lower lid, with hot tears flowing and the lids ulcerating into sores. If long-term treatment fails to cure, one need only drain the damp-heat from the Yangming Stomach meridian; then the swelling will subside, tearing will cease, and pain will be relieved. It is appropriate to use Huang Lian Jie Du Tang (Coptis Decoction for Resolving Toxicity) and San Huang Wan (Three Yellows Pill) as the main treatment. (From *Qi Xuan*)
Gu Shicheng stated: Dou Feng Yan (Smallpox Wind Eye) occurs when the eyes remain closed after smallpox; due to weak residual fire, the eyes are opened too early, allowing external wind to invade through the deficiency, causing itching and rubbing that leads to the condition.
