Menghan Yao (Knockout Drug) generally uses Hyoscyamus niger seed (Tianxianzi, 天仙子的主要成分) as the chief ingredient, added with substances such as fox heart. Although it is not lethal, it causes unconsciousness and inability to wake up. In Shandong, where apricot trees are abundant, some people take advantage of mental confusion to steal property; upon waking, patients have no memory at all, feel disoriented and unable to distinguish reality. Therefore, those who accidentally ingest Menghan Yao on the road suffer from a heavy head and light feet, salivation, staring eyes, and mutism, which is due to the clouding of the Heart spirit. Although not fatal, prolonged unconsciousness is also frightening. Cooling water can detoxify it to some extent, allowing slight recovery, but if cooling water enters the Heart and stagnates below the Heart, in deficient individuals, it will likely transform into other syndromes.
One might ask: This syndrome must be phlegm clouding the orifices of the Heart; should we use fresh ginger to open the orifices by administering ginger juice? Little do they know that Menghan Yao contains a large amount of Tianxianzi; encountering ginger juice will further confuse the Heart spirit. Therefore, it cannot be used.
Zhi Mi Tang (Stop Confusion Decoction)
Poria cocos (Baifuling, 白茯苓) - 5 qian
Raw licorice root (Sheng Gancao, 生甘草) - 2 qian
Melon stalk tip (Gua Di, 瓜蒂) - 7 pieces
Tangerine peel (Chenpi, 陈皮) - 5 fen
Decoct in water and drink. It will induce severe vomiting and awakening; previous events will not be forgotten, unlike detoxification with cooling water which leaves one in a drunken, dazed state.
Another prescription: Drinking cooling water brings relief.
Whenever someone drinks Zhen Jiu (Viper Wine/Poisoned Wine), their white eyes roll upward, the body shivers with cold, consciousness becomes vague and unaware, resembling a state of deep intoxication. The mind remains clear, but speech is impossible. Death occurs when the eyes close. Zhen poison is actually the feces of the Zhen bird, not its feathers, nor is it the red crest of a crane. Zhen feathers and crane crests do not kill people; they only cause illness. Only Zhen feces are toxic. This bird originates from foreign lands; foreigners feared that mentioning bird feces would lead people to despise it, so they simply referred to it as "Zhen" to imply its preciousness. This bird does not eat snakes or scorpions, so its toxicity is greater than that of peacock feces. Peacock feces mixed with wine may cause death in some but not others, whereas drinking Zhen poison ensures death without exception. Generally, Zhen poison is hot in nature and acts slowly, effectively blocking the flow of Qi, hence the inability to speak. The inevitable chills are due to intense heat-toxin in the Heart; the Heart vessels connect to the eyes, so Heart heat causes upward gaze. Eye closure indicates the exhaustion of Heart Qi, leading to death. Fortunately, the slow onset allows for rescue efforts. (Zhen is pronounced 'cheng')
