《灵枢》曰∶足阳明之脉,血气盛,髯美长;血少气多则髯短;气少血多则髯少;
又曰∶冲脉、任脉皆起于胞中,为经络之海,别而络于口,血气盛则充肤热肉;

Feng Luzhan stated: Beard hair belongs to the Kidney, receiving Water Qi, thus it grows from below; if Yin deficiency and Yang hyperactivity occur, the beard turns white and shiny. Hair belongs to the Heart, receiving Fire Qi, thus it grows from above; excessive mental labor causes Fire to flare upward and consume Blood, thus hair turns white and falls out early. Although their affiliations differ, there is nothing beyond nourishing Essence and Blood that can turn the beard black and darken the hair. (From *Jinnang*)
The *Lingshu* states: When the Qi and Blood of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian are abundant, the beard is beautiful and long; when Blood is scanty and Qi is abundant, the beard is short; when Qi is scanty and Blood is abundant, the beard is sparse; when both Qi and Blood are scanty, there is no beard.
It also states: The Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) and Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) both originate from the Baozhong (Uterus/Mid-Jiao), serving as the Sea of the Collaterals. They branch off to connect with the mouth. When Qi and Blood are abundant, they fill the skin and warm the flesh; when Blood alone is abundant, it permeates outward, causing lanugo to grow on the skin. Women have excess Qi but deficient Blood due to frequent blood loss; therefore, the Chong and Ren vessels do not nourish the lips and mouth, resulting in no beard growth. Eunuchs who have had their Zongjin (Genitals/Pubic region) removed injure the Chong Mai, leading to blood loss that cannot be restored, internal binding of the skin, and lack of nourishment to the lips and mouth, thus no beard grows. Those known as Tianhuan (Heavenly Eunuchs/Impotent men), characterized by innate failure of Yang Qi to rise and inability to engage in intercourse, have not been physically injured nor lost blood, yet their beards do not grow. Why? It is said: This is a congenital insufficiency; their Ren and Chong vessels are not vigorous, the Zongjin does not form properly, there is Qi but no Blood, and the lips and mouth are not nourished, thus the beard does not grow either. From this, we see that the lips and mouth are not solely related to the Spleen and Stomach.
