From the onset of She Shi (Snake Lice, a type of stubborn skin disease), Wu Lai (Black Leprosy), Xuan Zhen (Lichen Eruptions), up to Shi Tan Liu Zhu (Damp-Phlegm Flowing and Accumulating), all are compiled in this section for easy reference and treatment consultation.
Wang Kentang stated: She Shi manifests all over the body with a appearance resembling Feng Zhen (Wind Rash), Jie Chuang (Scabies), or Dan Du (Erysipelas). The color is white, painless but itchy; scratching produces white scales. Wash externally with a decoction of single herb Bai Ye (Cupressi Cacumen, Cypress Tip). Internally administer La Fan Wan (Beeswax and Alum Pill) and Jin Yin Zao Jiao Wan (Honeysuckle and Gleditsia Sinensis Pill). (*Yixue Zhunsheng*)
*Yizong Xinfa* states: Bai Lai (White Leprosy) is commonly known as She Shi. It arises on the skin, resembling rashes or scabies, with white coloration and itching; scratching yields white scales. This is caused by Wind Evil lodging in the skin and Blood Dryness failing to nourish the tissues. Rub externally with an equal mixture of Zhu You (Porcine Fat) and Ku Xing Ren (Bitter Apricot Seed), wrapped in silk cloth.
Wang Kentang stated: Lai Ji (Leprosy diseases) are contracted from exposure to malignant Wind and violating taboos. Initially, one may feel the hair and skin turning black, or experience intermittent bitter itching like insects crawling, or see objects before the eyes as if hanging threads. Speech may be erratic, and the heart often feels fearful. Within the skin and flesh, nodules may appear like peach or plum stones; wind rashes may turn black; limbs become stiffly numb, insensitive to needle pricking; the soles of the feet suffer stiff pain preventing walking. During eating, breath exits the mouth with a sound, and speech exhibits similar characteristics. Sores arise on the body, causing pain and itching with sensations of insect crawling; elbows may feel bound by ropes. This is named Wu Lai (Black Leprosy). There is also Hei Lai (Black Leprosy). The syndromes of these two types of Lai are largely similar with minor differences, thus they are not recorded separately. (*Yixue Zhunsheng*)
He further stated: Patients with Bai Lai have hoarse voices, blurred vision, stiffly painful limbs, high fever, mental restlessness and vexation, flaccid limbs, stiffness and tension in the back and spine, and internal sensations like needle pricks. Rashes may arise, often appearing distinctly white within the skin and flesh. Nasal polyps may form, and white opacities may grow in the eyes blocking the pupils, resulting in blindness. This is called Bai Lai.
Chen Shigong stated: Lai Feng (Leprous Wind) results from Damp-Heat boiling in the Yangming channel and manifesting on the muscle surface, or from invasion by Wind-Cold. The lesion begins with blisters that itch and form sores; upon rupture, serous fluid leaks out, with itching penetrating to the bone. Over time, lesions merge into patches spreading over the whole body. Patients often prefer hot baths, and the condition resembles Feng Lai (Wind Leprosy). For cases affecting the upper body, treatment focuses on sweating to release external toxins; for cases affecting the lower body, treatment focuses on draining to purge internal toxins. (*Waike Zhengzong*)
Chen Yuan Gong stated: When a person develops Lai disease all over the body, the skin thickens and sores form, bleeding like scabies, with pain or itching, dampness or dryness, appearing insect-like but not insects. People assume it is Damp-Heat lingering in the skin, who would know it is actually due to Qi and Blood failing to circulate and moisten thoroughly! Many use Ku Shen Decoction or Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) for external treatment without effect, precisely because of Qi and Blood deficiency. If Qi and Blood are sufficient, meridians will not face blockage; if Qi and Blood are vigorous, hair follicles will not suffer withering and dryness. Moreover, with abundant Qi and Blood, Heat dissipates and Dampness vanishes; how could stagnation occur and knot outside the skin? The treatment method prioritizes tonifying Qi and Blood, assisted by resolving Dampness and clearing Heat. Even chronic conditions lasting ten years can be cured, let alone recent Lai disease. Use Sao Lai Dan (Leprosy Sweeping Powder): Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) 3 liang, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Jin Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) each 2 liang, Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), and Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) each 1 liang, Shan Yu (Corni Fructus) and Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) each 5 qian, Sheng Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Spica), and Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix) each 3 qian, Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) 2 qian. Decoct in water and drink. Skin color becomes moist immediately; after two doses, dryness resolves; after ten doses, recovery is achieved. (*Shishi Milu*. This formula greatly tonifies Qi and Blood, akin to a dried field encountering abundant sweet rain; vitality thrives, water fills the plains, and pests like locust nymphs naturally dissolve into nothingness.)
