Ear Wind-Toxin
Wang Kentang stated: Ear wind-toxin refers to the condition where red pus frequently discharges from the ear. This is caused by wind-heat pathogenic factors obstructing upwards in the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian and Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian. (*Yixue Zhunsheng*)
Hu Gongbi stated: Ear wind-toxin is also known as Ermen toxin (Toxin at the Ear Gate). (*Qingnuang*)
He further stated: The upper, lower, anterior, and posterior parts of the ear all belong to the Shaoyang meridian and must not be easily ruptured. If the toxin once ulcerates, the condition must be carefully examined; it should not be treated lightly or negligently.
Dou Hanqing stated: Ear wind-toxin affects the Heart and Kidney. When Qi circulation is stagnant and obstructs in the Heart Meridian, it injures the ear.
Wang Kentang stated: Ear mushroom (Er Xun) and ear hemorrhoid (Er Zhi) do not suppurate, nor are they accompanied by aversion to cold or fever, and there is no external swelling or congestion. However, the ear feels blocked and unpatent, the course is lingering and unceasing, leading to deafness. (*Yixue Zhunsheng*)
Chen Shigong stated: There is also a condition called "Er Ting" (Ear Pillar), which forms inside the ear orifice. Due to the obstruction of Qi and blood vessels, pain persists incessantly. It should be treated with Baijiang Dan (White Reduction Paste) applied topically until the lesion is completely dissolved for recovery. (*Waike Zhengzong*)
Dou Hanqing stated: For treating ear hemorrhoid and ear mushroom, first puncture them with an acupuncture needle, then apply Hongyu Gao (Red Jade Ointment). If the ear feels distended and painful, drip juice of *Pilea cantoniensis* (Huercao) into the ear canal; the pain will cease immediately.
Wang Shengzhi stated: Er Ting is treated internally with Zhizi Qinggan Tang (Gardenia Liver-Clearing Decoction). Externally, Baijiang Dan (White Reduction Paste) or a thread dipped in the medicine is inserted into the fissures of the growth until it dissolves and heals spontaneously. (*Lili*)
Ear Mushroom, Ear Hemorrhoid
The *I Ching* states: The trigram Kan represents ear pain.
Wang Kentang stated: Brain deficiency ulcers (deficiency ulcers refer to unnamed swellings and toxins) cause severe ear pain that is unbearable. (*Yixue Zhunsheng*)
Feng Shi stated: Ear pain, tinnitus, ear itching, otorrhea, and ear sores should also be treated by distinguishing between cold, heat, deficiency, and excess based on the Shaoyin proper orifice. One cannot exclusively attribute them to fire pathogens or external evils. Generally, if tinnitus ceases or diminishes when pressed by hand, it indicates true deficiency; if tinnitus intensifies upon pressing, it indicates fire excess. In the past, Wang Wanli suffered from ear pain. Wei Wenjing advised him to take a decoction prepared with Green Salt, Deer Antler, Realgar, and Aconite. He remarked that this prescription was not intended for sovereign deficiency but pointed out the *I Ching* principle that "Kan represents ear pain." Kan water resides in the Kidney, opens into the ears, and corresponds to the emotion of Fear. Fear injures the Kidney, thus causing ear pain. Qi, being Yang, moves and manifests openly; Blood, being Yin, circulates and remains hidden. Blood within the body is like water within heaven and earth; therefore, Kan is the trigram of Blood, indicating that pathology has already manifested in these meridians. Ultimately, he took the medicine and recovered. (*Jinnang*)
