Feng Ting (Wind Courtyard): One pockmark in the center of the forehead constitutes the image of Feng Ting. Xin Ke (Heart Nest): Seven pockmarks fixed in the chest/diaphragm area indicate a complete and auspicious sign. If the distribution of pockmarks is sparse and open, the condition can be spared from danger; if not sparse but dense, efforts are futile.
Yun Ting (Cloud Courtyard): Pockmarks connect continuously from Yintang (between eyebrows) to Taiyang (temporal region), with many distributed on the four limbs, slightly open in the chest, and an extremely large number on the back (approximately one thousand pairs).
Lei Ting (Thunder Courtyard): Pockmarks branch out to the Taiyang region, with wide distribution on the four limbs, which is gratifying; only a few pockmarks on the chest, and dozens of pairs on the back.
Yu Ting (Rain Courtyard): Pockmarks at Yintang, Tianting (vertex), and Taiyang appear in a continuous chain, requiring vigilance against凶险 (ominous outcomes); pockmarks vary in size, showing three or four types, densely covering the body without gaps. Only the chest and abdomen show slight sparseness; however, if there is throat swelling and trismus (lockjaw), disaster is certain.
Lei Ting Pu Zhan (Thunder Courtyard Spreading Carpet): Pockmarks are as dense as a carpet, difficult to erupt; this type of smallpox is often due to internal toxin retention. It is difficult to administer medicine upon initial appearance; if not improved after nine days, severe injury occurs by the twelfth day. If pockmarks first appear at Yintang and Taiyang, nine out of ten cases will result in death. Even treating adverse patterns is futile; do not rely on divine protection.
On the first day of eruption, pockmarks appear in Gan Gong (Dry Palace, referring to specific facial/organ zones); there is no need for anxiety. Cases following the smooth pattern heal spontaneously without treatment; using decoctions may instead cause harm. If pockmarks are dense around the lips and mouth, and numerous on the head, itching occurs on the sixth day accompanied by abdominal discomfort. If Tianting and Yin-Yang areas show carpet-like density, thirst and cough disappear by the eighth or ninth day. If Yin-Yang areas are densely covered while cheeks are sparse, dry lips and diarrhea occur by the eighth or ninth day, indicating deficiency of healthy Qi. If toxins affect both cheeks, Yin-Yang Qi sinks; by the eighth or ninth day, toxins attack internally and external skin peels off. If the face becomes purple, black, and dry, forming black depression (hei xian), it is highly ominous by the seventh or eighth day, with changes occurring on the ninth day. If cheek, lip, and mouth pockmarks are shiny like water droplets, itchy and collapsed without pus, sores are easily damaged. If Tianting and Yin-Yang have only one water blister, and whole-body pockmarks are flat with slight elevation. If a single spot under the eye expands rapidly, later turning into black depression with trismus and trembling. If facial sores contain purple-black colors, panting occurs by the fifth or sixth day, indicating loss of Yuan Qi (Original Qi). If fever shows the "biao" (tip) with internal "zhen" (needle/hard root), why waste doctors' efforts? If accompanied by heat, redness, and largeness, without internal scorching signs, the whole body will surely improve day by day.
Jue Yue: Feng Ni (Wind Adverse): Five pockmarks resembling plum blossoms, arranged in a 'pin' character shape on the dorsum of the hand, is definitive. Seven connected pockmarks in the heart pit indicate that knowledgeable practitioners use excellent medication.
Yun Ni (Cloud Adverse): Pockmarks connect to the Taiyang region, abundant on limbs, open in chest/heart, and definitely one thousand pairs on the back.
Lei Ni (Thunder Adverse): Pockmarks spread like a carpet, difficult to erupt, often due to entangled toxins; difficult to treat initially, leading to death after nine or ten days.
Yu Ni (Rain Adverse): Pockmarks form a continuous round chain, varying in size (two or three types), dense all over the body but sparse on the belly; throat swelling and hoarseness are unbearable.
Dian Ni (Lightning Adverse): Pockmarks branch past the Taiyang region, widely distributed on limbs, very auspicious. If seven or three spots arise on a fleshy belly, natural scab separation will occur without panic.
