癸丑年四月，国子监生冯海粟先生来到寒舍，谈及他的亲戚陈某在感染瘟疫后又患痢疾。我说：“如果用治疗痢疾的方法去治，恐怕会引发其他变证。”
到了七月，冯先生再次来访，说陈某患痿证已两个月，各种药物都无效，邀请我去诊治。到达后，我诊察他的脉象，沉、紧、弦、数；观察他的面色，好像没有生病的样子，只是仰卧在床上，不能翻身侧卧，从腰部以下，疼痛如火烧燎一般。查看之前的处方，总不外乎滋阴补气，使用杜仲、续断、牛膝、虎胫骨等类药物。我说：“针对这种病症施用这些药物，谁会说不对呢？但是结合脉象与症状，结合症状与形体表现来看，这是热毒流注于下部所致，并非痿证。”
于是用小剂量的败毒饮，加入知母、黄柏、木瓜、萆薢、川牛膝、威灵仙、木通。服用两剂后疼痛减轻，脚能活动了；服用六剂后扶起就能站立；不到十剂，就能挪动脚步了。后来用汤药送服扶桑丸，一个月痊愈。
In the fourth month of the Gui Chou year, Feng Haisu, a student at the Imperial Academy (Guozijian), visited my residence and mentioned that his relative, Mr. Chen, had suffered from dysentery following an epidemic febrile disease. I said, "If treated as dysentery, there is a risk of developing other complications."
By the seventh month, Mr. Feng returned, stating that Mr. Chen had been suffering from flaccidity syndrome (Wei Syndrome) for two months with no effect from various medicines, and invited me to treat him. Upon arrival, I examined his pulse, which was deep (Chen), tight (Jin), wiry (Xuan), and rapid (Shu); observed his complexion, which appeared normal as if he were not ill; noted that he lay supine in bed, unable to turn over or change position; and found severe burning pain below the waist. Reviewing previous prescriptions, they consisted mainly of yin-nourishing and qi-tonifying herbs such as Eucommiae Cortex (Duzhong), Dipsaci Radix (Xuduan), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi), and Panther Bone (Hujing). I remarked, "For this condition, using such medications seems reasonable on the surface. However, correlating the pulse with symptoms and symptoms with physical presentation, this is caused by heat-toxin flowing downward, not flaccidity syndrome."
I therefore prescribed a small dose of Baidu Yin (Defeat Toxin Decoction) modified with Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu), Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai), Chaenomelis Fructus (Mugua), Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma (Bixie), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Chuan Niuxi), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Weilingxian), and Akebiae Caulis (Mutong). After two doses, the pain decreased, and the legs could move. After six doses, he could stand with support. Before ten doses, he could take steps. Subsequently, decoctions were administered along with Fusang Wan (Mulberry Pill), resulting in recovery within one month.
