Qin Zi stated: "Bi" (Obstruction) refers to blockage. When the meridians and collaterals are obstructed, it leads to numbness and loss of sensation. It may present as wandering pain, condensation in the joints, heaviness making movement difficult, or even hemiplegia and dysfunction of the limbs; hence it is named "Bi". Here, four types of exogenous Bi syndromes and eight types of endogenous Bi syndromes are listed.
[Symptoms of Wind-Bi] Pain wanders up and down, left and right, moving without a fixed location; therefore, it is called "Xing-Bi" (Wandering Bi). This is the manifestation of Bi caused by Wind pathogen.
[Etiology of Wind-Bi] It occurs due to insufficient Yuan Qi (Original Qi), physical weakness after illness, or hunger and overexertion, allowing Wind pathogen to take advantage and invade, thereby triggering Wind-Bi symptoms.
[Pulse of Wind-Bi] The pulse may appear floating and moderate (Huan), indicating external Wind invasion; floating and rapid (Shu), indicating Wind-Heat; or floating and tight (Jin), distinguishing Cold from Wind. [Note: The original text ends abruptly with "Floating", implying further differentiation].
[Treatment of Wind-Bi] For attacking pain caused by Wind-Cold, use Fangfeng Tang (Saposhnikovia Decoction). If pathogens exist in both the exterior and interior, use Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia Powder for Unblocking the Exterior and Interior), Hexue Santong Tang (Blood-Nourishing and Pain-Relieving Decoction), or Da Qin Jiao Tang (Large Gentian Decoction). For pain caused by Wind-Heat, use Siwu Ermi Wan (Four Substances and Two Marvels Pill). For Damp-Wind pathogenic factors, use Cangfang Ermi Tang (Atractylodes and Saposhnikovia Two Marvels Decoction).

[Symptoms of Cold-Bi] Severe pain and suffering, stiffness and contraction of the limbs; pain alleviates slightly with heat and worsens with cold; this is called "Tong-Bi" (Painful Bi). This is the manifestation of Bi caused by Cold pathogen.
[Etiology of Cold-Bi] Due to insufficiency of Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi) and failure of Wei Yang (Defensive Yang) to secure the exterior, leading to loose skin pores and unconsolidated interstices. Exposure to cold, rain, sleeping outdoors, or facing the wind allows Cold pathogen to invade, triggering Cold-Bi.
[Pulse of Cold-Bi] The pulse is mostly floating and tight (Fu Jin), or floating and wiry (Fu Xian), or deep and slow (Chen Chi). If the pulse appears rapid (Shu), it indicates Cold stagnation transforming into Heat.
[Treatment of Cold-Bi] If Cold injures the Taiyang channel, with deficiency in Ying level and no sweating, use Mahuang Xuming Tang (Ephedra Continuation Life Decoction). If it injures the Wei level with sweating, use Guizhi Xuming Tang (Cinnamon Twig Continuation Life Decoction). If Cold injures the Yangming channel, use Gange Xuming Tang (Kudzu Continuation Life Decoction). If it affects Shaoyang, use Chaihu Xuming Tang (Bupleurum Continuation Life Decoction). Currently, the family secret formula, Shiwei Qianghuo Tang (Ten-Ingredient Notopterygium Decoction), is established to treat these generally.
