The appearance of the smallpox rash resembles seeds sown on a silkworm mulberry leaf; the Xiao Du (severe toxic pathogen) is heavy, the disease course is adverse and ominous. Quickly use Guizong Tang (Return to Origin Decoction) for rescue; if the toxin loosens and the pustules rise, survival may be hoped for.
[Note] When the smallpox rash emerges densely like seeds sown on a silkworm mulberry leaf, it is named "Can Zhong" (Silkworm Seed). This indicates that the Xiao Du (severe toxic pathogen) is excessively heavy, representing an extremely adverse and ominous condition. Quickly attack it with Guizong Tang (Return to Origin Decoction), allowing the toxin to loosen and the pustules to rise, so that survival can be hoped for.
The smallpox lesions are clustered and connected like a swallow's nest, fine and dense without forming distinct granules. Apply Yan Zhi (Vermilion Paste) externally to the lesions, and internally administer Liang Xue Jie Du Tang (Cool Blood and Detoxify Decoction) to harmonize.
[Note] When the smallpox rash emerges in clusters, connected finely and densely without forming distinct granules, it is thus called "Yan Wo" (Swallow's Nest). It is suitable to apply Yan Zhi Gao (Vermilion Ointment) externally via patching, and internally take Liang Xue Jie Du Tang (Cool Blood and Detoxify Decoction) to harmonize.
Four or five lesions connected together are named "Shu Ji" (Rat Trace); involvement of the whole body indicates a severe case, while limited occurrence is mild. Quickly use Guizong Tang (Return to Origin Decoction) to attack the toxic heat; only when they merge into blisters can life be saved.
[Note] When four or five, or six or seven smallpox lesions emerge and adhere to each other, it is named "Shu Ji" (Rat Trace). Cases appearing in one or two locations are mild, while those covering the whole body are severe. Quickly attack with Guizong Tang (Return to Origin Decoction), causing them to merge into blisters, so that the toxin is resolved and survival can be hoped for.
The smallpox morphology is flat and sunken without granules, gathered in clumps resembling stacked coins. Apply Yan Zhi mixed externally via patching, and internally take Liang Xue Gong Du Yin (Cool Blood and Attack Toxin Drink) for recovery.
[Note] When the smallpox spots have appeared but remain flat and sunken without rising, with indistinct granules gathered in clumps resembling stacked coins, this is due to blood heat and abundant toxin.
