Cao Dushi, a palace attendant, had newly built a residence. Half a month after moving in, he became heavily intoxicated by alcohol, lay on the ground, lost his voice, and could not speak. Sun Zhao was summoned for diagnosis. After examining him, Sun said: "This illness is caused by the new residence; it will heal in half a month. Simply take Buxin Shanyao Wan (Heart-Nourishing Yam Pills). To treat dampness, use Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) and Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma); full recovery will occur within a month." When Cao appeared before the Emperor, the Emperor asked who treated him. Cao replied: "Physician Sun Zhao." The Emperor then summoned Sun and asked: "What disease does Cao suffer from?" Sun answered: "The walls of any new residence contain moist soil, and the ground possesses excessive Yin energy. Upon initial entry, the Yin-damp qi has not yet dissipated. If the patient's Heart Qi is inherently deficient, intoxication causes the pores to open, allowing Yin-damp qi to enter and attack the Heart, resulting in aphonia. I first used Shanyao Wan to strengthen the Heart Qi, and then employed Chuanxiong and Xixin to dispel dampness, thereby restoring speech."
A patient suffered from fire-pathology-induced hoarseness. Physicians claimed it was an incurable condition. I palpated the right pulse as flooding and forceful. Learning that his throat did not hurt, and inquiring about previous treatments, I found they had all taken cold-natured formulas. Consequently, I prescribed Tiamendong (Asparagi Radix), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Shashen (Glehniae Radix), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), a small amount of Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Haifen (Calamari Endothecium), and Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam). After dozens of doses, he recovered, and his voice returned to normal. Additionally, mixing aged Huaihua (Sophorae Flos) dried nine times with honey, chewing one piece slowly before sleep, and swallowing it with saliva yields excellent results.
