Redness, swelling, and pain of the eyes accompanied by nebula (corneal opacity); if the condition persists for years without cure, or even if slightly reduced, it remains intolerably itchy and astringent. This formula is indicated for such cases.
The simultaneous occurrence of redness, pain, swelling, and nebula is due to wind-heat flowing into the Yuanfu (the gate of qi mechanism in the eye). If the method of attacking and dispersing is not appropriate, it merely empties the body's constitution, allowing the pathogen to penetrate deeper; thus, the disease lingers without healing, with intermittent itching and pain. This is also a disease where wind-heat is uncontrolled. In the above formula, Baizhi, Manjingzi, Jingjie, and Fangfeng, together with Honghua and Taoren, can disperse wind and clear heat; once wind-heat recedes, pain and itching should cease. Xiong, Danggui, Shaoyao, and Shihu, in conjunction with Danshen, Puhuang, Shancigu, and Tufuling, can move blood and dispel wind, and further regulate damp-heat; once damp-heat is eliminated, redness, swelling, and nebula will subside together. Although these symptoms are common in both men and women, there are cases I have treated for months with no effect. Quack doctors in the market often prescribe one formula per symptom, boasting of their own methods; encountering this condition inevitably leads to bilateral blindness. Students must be aware of this and not neglect it.
Poem:
Hongtao Baizhi obscures the green pupil,
Danshen, Shihu, Xiong, Danggui exert their skill.
Jing, Man, Gupu, Ling transform into earth,
Fangfeng does not emerge, slightly drowsy.

Facial paralysis (deviation of mouth and eyes) with surging phlegm-saliva; this formula is indicated for such cases.
Trees must first wither before wind destroys them. Humans must first become deficient before wind enters. Persons with Qi deficiency have loose Couli (skin pores and interstices), making them susceptible to external wind. Persons with Blood deficiency have unbalanced Liver Wood, making internal wind prone to arise. Therefore, Zang deficiency leads to strike on the Zang, Fu deficiency leads to strike on the Fu, and Mai Luo (meridian-collateral) deficiency leads to strike on the Mai Luo. Strike on the Zang often obstructs the Nine Orifices, resulting in lockjaw, aphonia, closed eyes or upward gaze, and inability to urinate or defecate. Strike on the Fu often affects the four limbs, resulting in hemiplegia, immobility of hands and feet, abundant phlegm-saliva, and thunderous breathing sounds. Strike on the Mai Luo is the mildest, manifesting only as deviation of the mouth and eyes and a desire to sleep heavily. This is because wind fills the chest, steaming fluids into phlegm-saliva, which surges upward to the head and face. Therefore, Fangfeng, Baifu, Quanxie, and Chuanwu are used to activate wind-phlegm in the meridians and correct facial deviation; Danning, Banxia, Gancao, and Muxiang are used to treat wind-phlegm in the chest and open obstruction. After taking the medicine, the wind subsides slightly, hence the name "Shengfeng Tang" (Wind-Reducing Decoction). As for strike on the Fu, sweating is appropriate, following Yang; strike on the Zang requires treating the interior, following Yin. In such cases, one should gather wisdom and plan collectively, adjusting formulas according to each symptom and stage.
Poem:
Shengfeng Tang selects Quanxie,
Banxia, Baifu, Chuanwu, and Danning align.
Herbs and sweet aromatics stir the Stomach,
Calmly preventing wind from blocking phlegm-saliva.
