[Formula: Mizhen Wan (Secret Essence Pill)]
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix), Bai Zi Ren (Platycladi Semen), Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Tu Si Zi (Cuscutae Semen), Jin Ying Zi (Chrysanthemi Fructus - *Note: Standard is Rosa laevigata*, here translated as Chimonanthi Fructus or Rosa Laevigatae Fructus depending on context, but strictly following text "Jin Ying Zi" -> Rosa Laevigatae Fructus), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Mu Li (Ostreae Concha), Long Gu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi).
Indicated for all types of seminal emission, turbid leukorrhea, stranguria, nocturnal emission, excessive sweating, and irregular menstruation leading to dim vision and photophobia. This formula is the primary treatment.
Essence (Jing), Qi, and Spirit (Shen) constitute the substance of the True Origin (Zhen Yuan). Spirit commands Qi, and Qi commands Essence; this constitutes the function of the True Origin. Once injured by emotional desires, the substance and function become disordered and discordant, thus giving rise to the aforementioned symptoms.
In this formula, Ren Shen, Shan Yao, and Gan Cao are used to establish the congenital foundation (Tai) and protect the acquired foundation (Mu), thereby ensuring peace and harmony in all aspects. Suan Zao Ren, Yuan Zhi, and Bai Zi Jiao (Bai Zi Ren) are used to communicate between the Heart and Kidney, preventing the arising of deflaming fire (Yin Huo). Dang Gui, Di Huang, Shan Zhu Yu, Wu Wei Zi, and Tu Si Zi are used to nourish and cultivate the Water and Wood organs (Liver and Kidney), ensuring the source remains uninterrupted. As for Jin Ying Zi, Long Gu, and Mu Li, their astringent properties are employed to consolidate collapse and arrest leakage. Combined with the other herbs, they serve to secretively secure the True Origin, preventing it from being depleted by Yin pathogens. Hence, it is named "Mizhen" (Secret Essence).
Poem: The true person dwells far away and does not wish to return, / Platyclad and jujube seeds form benevolence and medicine of dodder seed. / Dragon bone, licorice, oyster shell, / Golden rose hip consumed leaves the taste of cornus.
[Formula: Erqi Zuogui Wan (Two-Qi Left-Restoration Pill)]
Bai Dang Shen (Codonopsis Radix), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Sha Yuan Zi (Astragali Complanati Semen), Lu Jiao Jiao (Colla Cornus Cervi), Gui Ban Jiao (Colla Testudinis Carapacis et Plastronis), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus) (each 2 liang); Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus), Rong蓉 (Cistanches Herba), Rui Ren (Buckwheat Fruit? No, Wu Zhu Yu? Text says Wei Rui Ren usually refers to Polygonatum odorati Rhizoma or similar, often translated as Polygonatum Odorati Rhizoma or just kept as Rui Ren), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) (each 3 liang); Xia Ku Cao (Prunellae Spica), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Chu Shi Zi (Torreya Seed) (each 1 liang); Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Chong Wei Zi (Leonuri Fructus) (each 5 qian).
Indicated for tearing without specific timing (spontaneous lacrimation). This formula is the primary treatment.
Tears are transformed fluids, originating from the Kidney. Tears forming water-like fluid is due to the Liver. When the liver orifice is not dense/tight, internal deficiency wind arises, causing spontaneous weeping at any time. The therapeutic method should treat both the Liver and Kidney simultaneously. Therefore, Ren Shen, Shan Yao, Xia Ku Cao, Rou Gui, Huang Qi, Fang Feng, Bai Ju (White Chrysanthemum), Chong Wei Zi, and Chu Shi Zi are used to ascend the Yang Qi within the Liver, thereby dispersing internal wind and securing the orifices. Di Huang, Dang Gui, Gou Qi Zi, Rong Rong (Cistanche), Shan Zhu Yu, Gui Lu Jiao (Tortoise and Deer Glue), Rui Ren, Wu Wei Zi, and Sha Yuan Zi are used to nurture and sustain the Yin Blood within the Kidney, naturally moistening overflowing fire and unblocking the source of transformation. It is called "Erqi Zuogui" (Two-Qi Left-Restoration) because Yang Qi returns to the Liver, and Yin Qi returns to the Kidney; the Liver and Kidney are located on the left side of the body, hence the name. After the pill is prepared, it is advisable to decoct Long Yan (Longan Aril), Li Zhi (Lychee Seed/Aril), Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus), and Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) in soup, and take 2-3 qian orally at any time.
Poem: Two qi medicines return to ginseng, goji, and jujube, / Astragalus, torreya, rehmannia, leonurus, and prunella herb. / Saposhnikovia, astragalus complanatus, chrysanthemum, and cistanche, / Tortoise and deer glue, buckwheat fruit, cinnamon, and schisandra are good.
