Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Ligusticum Chionantifolii Rhizoma et Radix (Chuanxiong), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhi), Gentianae Radix (Danshen), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Freesiae Bulbus (Menghua), Equiseti Herba (Muzei), in equal proportions.
Pulverize into fine powder. Take one qian per dose, mixed and taken with rock sugar water. After taking for one hundred days, apply Baodan (Precious Pill).
Commentary: In this formula, Angelicae Sinensis Radix and Ligusticum Chionantifolii Rhizoma et Radix are used to nourish blood; the eyes can see when they receive blood nourishment. Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix and Saposhnikoviae Radix are used to disperse heat; when heat recedes, vision becomes clear. Licorice Root (Gancao), Gardeniae Fructus, and Bupleuri Radix enter the Liver Meridian to clear Liver Fire; when Liver Fire is cleared, redness of the eyes subsides. Freesiae Bulbus and Equiseti Herba are indispensable herbs for treating trichiasis (in-turned eyelashes) and lacrimation.
For corneal opacity obscuring the pupil after smallpox, the following is suitable:
Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shudi), Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Saposhnikoviae Radix, Bombyx Batryticatus (Chantui), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, Tatarian Sowthistle Fruit (Baibiji, stir-fried), Equiseti Herba, each one qian; Panax Notoginseng Radix (Heishen) five fen; Sparganii Rhizoma (Nangujingcao) one qian; Astragali Complanati Semen (Shayuanjili) one qian; Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle (Zhigancao), each one qian five fen; Rhinocerotis Cornu Pulvis (Xijiao mo) one qian.
Grind all into a fine powder. Take two fen per dose for children, five fen for adults. Mix with decoction of sheep liver and take after meals. This formula clears cloud-like opacities.
Commentary: This formula contains mostly blood-cooling herbs. It is used to clear pathogenic heat accumulated in the blood level.
For corneal opacity obscuring the pupil after smallpox, accompanied by lacrimation and photophobia, the following is suitable:
Gentianae Radix five fen; Chrysanthemi Flos (Juhua), Tatarian Sowthistle Fruit (Baibiji, stir-fried), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi), each three fen; Saposhnikoviae Radix, Coptidis Rhizoma, each two fen; Bombyx Batryticatus, Equiseti Herba, each four fen.
Decoct half a teacup of water until it boils twice. Take warm. This formula clears cloud-like opacities.
Commentary: This formula addresses pathogenic heat manifesting in the eyes. For such cases, adding stir-fried Viticis Fructus (Manjingzi) and Freesiae Bulbus as principal herbs is appropriate.
For poison from smallpox entering the eye, causing various types of corneal opacity, the following is suitable:
Leporis Faeces (Tufen) four liang (stir-fried); Haliotidis Concha (Shijueming, seven-holed variety, calcined) one liang; Cassiae Semen (Caojueming) eight qian; Equiseti Herba one liang; Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao) one liang; Angelicae Sinensis Radix five qian; Saposhnikoviae Radix one liang; Sparganii Rhizoma two qian.
Grind all into a fine powder and make pills with honey, sized like mung beans. Take twenty pills per dose, washed down with Schizonepetae Herba decoction. After taking for one hundred days, apply Tu Yun San (Cloud-Dispelling Powder).
Whenever smallpox poison enters the eye and forms cloud-like opacities, regularly taking Leporis Faeces alone in honey pills will yield efficacy.
Corneal opacity covering the pupil after smallpox occurs due to improper nursing, allowing smallpox poison to enter the eyes. This often happens during the scabbing stage, when the face is covered with broken sores that swell again and ooze pus, causing pus and blood to adhere firmly, with toxic qi attacking the eyes. Or, if the rash was too dense and developed slowly, excessive use of acrid-warm medicines may also cause toxic qi to enter the eyes. Alternatively, consuming spicy fried foods after scabs fall off—commonly known as "dry paste"—can cause internal fire and heat to fan each other, leading toxic qi to enter the eyes. Opacities arising on the sclera (white part of the eye) will naturally recede over time. If opacity on the cornea (black part of the eye) covers the pupil, urgent application of the following is required:
