Chen Shiduo said: The method of nasal suction therapy should not use decoctions, but rather employ the technique of nasal suction. For instance, when a woman gives birth and the fetus is delivered but the placenta does not descend; or when headache persists for a long time without healing; or when the rectum prolapses and fails to retract for a long time; or when sores and toxins first appear, and it is unknown whether the syndrome is Yin or Yang, all these conditions can be treated by administering medicine via nasal inhalation. After the fetus has been born, if the placenta suddenly ascends upwards, there must be symptoms of evil blood rushing to the heart, which is an extremely critical situation. If one uses purgative medicines to force it down, it will deplete the primordial Qi, possibly leading to sudden death. It is better to take one qian (approx. 3-5g) of Ricini Semen (Bibangzi, 蓖麻子), crush it into a paste, and apply it to the sole of the mother's foot; shortly thereafter, the placenta will naturally descend. In more severe cases where the placenta has fallen and the child is born, yet the large intestine prolapses, this is even more terrifying. This is due to extreme deficiency causing sinking of Qi. The treatment principle should involve using Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) combined with Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) and Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) to lift the Qi. However, immediately after childbirth, it is inappropriate to use Sheng Ma and Chai Hu as they are dispersing herbs that might scatter the Zheng Qi (Upright Qi), fearing that the Qi will disperse further making it harder for the intestine to retract. Instead, one should still use only Ricini Semen (Bibangzi, 蓖麻子), crush it into a paste, and apply it to the top of the mother's head (Baihui point); shortly thereafter, the intestine will naturally retract into the body. Urgently wash off the Ricini Semen (Bibangzi, 蓖麻子) from the top of the head with warm water, ensuring no residue remains. If too much time passes, the intestine may hang upwards, becoming another critical and incurable condition. The same applies to the descent of the placenta; cleanliness is essential in both cases. As for headaches, simply take one grain of Ricini Semen (Bibangzi, 蓖麻子), crush it, mix it with a small amount of Zao Rou (Jujube Flesh, 枣肉), pound them together evenly, and form pills the size of a soybean. Wrap the pill externally with silk floss and insert it into the nostril. Shortly, clear mucus will flow out; at this point, remove the pill. Do not leave it inside for long, otherwise the headache will heal and never recur. If left inside for too long, it will inevitably cause the brain marrow to leak out, resulting in an incurable condition. Remember this well, remember this well.
When sores and toxins first appear, there is a detoxifying stone, known as "Suction Stone," which adheres to the sore and extracts the toxin. If the toxin is light, one suction is sufficient to extract it; if heavy, several days of suction are required before it comes out. One must not be impatient, as the patient will naturally remove it. This stone is excellent; one piece can be used for three years, but it is only suitable for treating small sores. For major toxic carbuncles and ulcers, it is still best to treat them with the aforementioned decoctions. These are the points to know regarding nasal suction therapy.
