Lei Gong Zhen Jun said: When a person suddenly vomits a large amount of blood, people usually attribute it to Fire pathogen (Fire), and thus frequently use Cold-Cooling herbs to purge the Fire. However, as the Fire recedes, the bleeding becomes even more severe; or if hemostatic herbs are used for treatment, there is still no effect. This is due to Blood failing to return to its proper meridians (Blood not returning to the vessels). If one were to further attack with heavy doses of Cold-Cooling herbs to purge Fire, death would be inevitable. One should use Qi-tonifying herbs, assisted by ingredients that guide Blood back to its meridians. Hemostasis will occur naturally without the need for specific astringent actions. The prescription used is Yin Xue Tang (Blood-Guiding Decoction): Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) 5 qian, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 1 liang, Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Herba) stir-fried until blackened 3 qian, Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) 2 qian. Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, the bleeding stops invariably. The brilliance of this formula lies not in specifically tonifying Blood, but in tonifying Qi to generate Blood; even more ingeniously, it does not merely attempt to stop bleeding, but achieves hemostasis by promoting Blood circulation. For Blood tends to stagnate and cease flowing when exposed to Cold, but returns to its meridians and ceases to rebel when exposed to dispersing Qi. To save life in the critical moment between life and death, this formula truly possesses miraculous efficacy.
When a person vomits blood due to extreme anger, the flow may be like a pouring basin or gushing from the mouth, accompanied by sudden fainting. This is also a matter of life and death within moments. If treated with hemostatic herbs, Qi stagnation causes discomfort and unrest; if treated with Blood-tonifying herbs, chest pain becomes unbearable. Often, various complications arise leading to death. Therefore, the treatment method must be appropriate. The prescription used is Jie Xue Ping Qi Tang (Blood-Resolving and Qi-Calming Decoction): Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 2 liang, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 2 liang, Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Herba) stir-fried until blackened 3 qian, Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) 8 fen, Hong Hua (Carthami Flos) 2 qian, Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus) stir-fried blackened 3 qian, Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 qian. Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, Qi flows smoothly; after two doses, bleeding stops; after three doses, the disease is completely cured. Anger injures the Liver, causing Liver Qi to become unbalanced, leading to sudden vomiting of blood. If one does not first soothe the Qi but hastily attempts to stop bleeding, it only agitates the Wood Qi of the Liver further. As Qi becomes more vigorous, bleeding increases. The妙 (wonder) of using a large dose of Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) in the formula is its ability to calm the Liver and soothe Qi. Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Herba) and Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) both guide Blood back to the meridians and are suitable for resolving depression and widening the hypochondrium. Thus, the therapeutic effect is rapid, and hemostasis is truly miraculous. This success is not primarily due to the Blood-tonifying property of Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix); Dang Gui merely assists Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) in achieving success.
Whenever a person suffers from metrorrhagia (uterine bleeding) that does not stop, it is predominantly a disease of women. It is often accompanied by temporary fainting, and sometimes leads to unconsciousness and death. This condition often arises from excessive lust. If treated improperly, using daily astringent and consolidating herbs will inevitably cause mild cases to become severe and severe cases to become fatal. The prescription used is An Beng Tang (Metrorrhagia-Calming Decoction): Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) 1 liang, Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) 1 liang, Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 1 liang, San Qi (Notoginseng Radix et Rhizoma powder) 3 qian. Decoct in water, mix in the San Qi (Notoginseng Radix et Rhizoma) powder, and take orally. One dose stops the metrorrhagia, turning danger into safety. After massive blood loss, only Qi remains. Tonifying Blood alone without tonifying Qi is too slow to be effective. Here, we urgently consolidate the nearly exhausted Qi, assisted by San Qi (Notoginseng Radix et Rhizoma) to astringe the Blood. Once Qi is consolidated, Blood will naturally not leak.
