[Da Qianghuo Tang (Great Notopterygia Decoction)] Also known as Jiuwei Qianghuo Tang (Nine-Ingredient Notopterygia Decoction) or Chonghe Tang (Harmony Decoction). It treats Taiyang Cold Damage with a floating and tight pulse, Wind Strike with a floating and moderate pulse, and the severe condition of Lianggan (simultaneous contraction of exterior and interior meridians).
Herbs: Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (each 1.5 qian), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (0.5 qian), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 qian).
Decoction method: Use two zhong of water, decoct until eight fen remains. Tao Jian'an's pounding method: Decoct with three slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and two dates (Jujubae Fructus) until one zhong remains; add five spoons of juice from Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus, crushed); then decoct together for one or two boils before administration.
Commentary: Zhang Jiegu said, "Those with sweating should not take Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba); those without sweating should not take Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus)." If the condition does not resolve, the complications are countless. Therefore, this formula was established to avoid the contraindications of the Three Yang meridians; it is a divine method for releasing the exterior.
[Xiao Qianghuo Tang (Lesser Notopterygia Decoction)] This formula is derived by removing Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), and Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) from the base formula, and adding Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Baifuling (Poria cum Pinodia), Manjingzi (Viticis Semen), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), and Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos). It treats dizziness and turbidity of the head and eyes due to irregular wind-qi, stagnation, stiffness throughout the body, headache and neck rigidity caused by wind-cold accumulation, nasal congestion with heavy voice, painful joints, and discomfort felt in advance during cloudy or rainy weather.
[Shenjie San (Spirit-Releasing Powder)] This is Da Qianghuo Tang combined with Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) and other herbs to resolve and benefit Lianggan Cold Damage, with miraculous effects. Detailed explanations can be found in the book *Nan Zhi*.
[Jiawei Qianghuo Tang (Modified Notopterygia Decoction)**] This is Da Qianghuo Tang with Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) removed, and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and Huangqi (Astragali Radix) added. It treats headache, fever, aversion to wind, spontaneous sweating, and a floating-moderate pulse.
[Qingshu Qianghuo Tang (Summerheat-Clearing Notopterygia Decoction)] This is Da Qianghuo Tang with Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) and Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) added. It treats summer heat wind-strike.
[Da Qianghuo Combined Formula] This combines Da Qianghuo Tang, Qianghuo San (Notopterygia Powder), and Shiquan Dabu Tang (Complete Great Tonifying Decoction), removing Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and adding Digupi (Bark of Lycium Root Cortex), Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum), and Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), totaling thirty-three ingredients. Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Fuling (Poria) are each 3 qian; Sheng Cang Shi Shao (interpreted as raw Cangzhu and Chi Shao based on context, though text says 'Sheng Cang Shi Shao') and Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) are 4 qian and 1 qian respectively; the rest are each 2 qian. Mix evenly, decoct two zhong of water to one zhong, and take warm. Add three slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) if cloudy. It treats deficiency of Liver and Kidney, weak sinews and bones, difficulty speaking, and mental confusion, caused by damp-wind-heat affecting the interior and weakness within. Whether thin or fat individuals suffer from hemiplegia or immobility, or experience forgetfulness due to fear or excessive thinking due to joy, all stem from insufficiency of Essence. This medicine can calm the heart, nourish the spirit, and harmonize Yin and Yang.
[Xiangsu San (Perilla and Cyperus Powder)] It treats headache and fever caused by wind-strike in the four seasons, as well as Plague and Cold Damage.
Herbs: Zisu (Perillae Folium), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) (vinegar-processed, de-haired, each 2 liang), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (de-white, 1 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (0.5 liang).
Decoction method: Grind the above four ingredients into coarse powder. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct with one zhan of water until seven fen remains, remove dregs, and take hot. Time is not restricted; take three times daily. If made into fine powder, take only 2 qian, mixed with salt.
My Commentary: The *Taiping Huimin Jufang* records that in the past, a white-haired old man gave this formula to a wealthy family. When they administered it, a great plague broke out in the city, and all patients recovered. Afterwards... [Text incomplete, mentions epidemic ghosts, assisted by cold, etc.]
