[Rhinoceros Horn]
Taste and Nature: Bitter, sour, salty; cold in nature; non-toxic. It is indicated for various toxins, Gu poison (parasitic disease), Zhu qi (infectious wasting disease), evil spirits, and miasma. It resolves the toxicity of Gouwen (Aconitum ferox), Zhen feathers (poisonous bird feathers), and snake venom. It expels pathogenic factors and prevents confusion or nightmares during sleep. Long-term use makes the body feel light.
Chen Xiuyuan stated: Rhinoceros horn has a cold nature, inheriting the Qi of Water. Its bitter, sour, and salty taste without toxicity corresponds to the flavors of Wood, Fire, and Water. Its ability to treat various toxins, Gu poison, Zhu qi, evil spirits, and miasma stems from the rhinoceros being a spiritual beast; its spiritual energy is borrowed to repel evil. Its ability to resolve specific venoms arises because cattle belong to Earth while rhinos dwell in Water, obtaining the essence of both Earth and Water; thus, when toxic substances enter Earth and Water, they are transformed and neutralized. The effects of preventing confusion, nightmares, and making the body light reflect the efficacy of the intersection of Water and Fire (Shui Huo Ji Ji). Currently, people use it to treat blood disorders, which does not align with the original intent of the classic texts.
[Antelope Horn]
Taste and Nature: Salty; cold in nature; non-toxic. It improves vision, benefits Qi, raises Yin, removes stagnant blood, and stops diarrhea. It repels Gu poison and evil omens, ensuring frequent absence of nightmares. (Commonly known as Antelope)
[Reference Annotation] Antelope horn has a cold nature and salty taste, entering the Kidney and Bladder meridians. Its indication for improving vision is due to its salty and cold nature nourishing Kidney Water; sufficient Water clarifies the eyes. Its benefit to Qi arises because Water can transform into Qi. Its ability to raise Yin relates to the fact that the genitalia belong to the Sinews (Zong Jin) and are governed by the Liver; the Liver belongs to Wood, and Wood withers under the scorching sun but stands erect under rain and dew. The salty taste breaks blood, hence it treats the removal of stagnant blood. The cold nature clears heat, hence it stops diarrhea. Gu poison is a toxin of damp-heat, which can be eliminated by salty and cold properties. The claims of repelling evil omens and preventing nightmares exaggerate its miraculous spiritual communication.
[Deer Antler Velvet]
Taste and Nature: Sweet; warm in nature; non-toxic. It treats leukorrhea with dark blood, alternating chills and fever, convulsions and epilepsy, benefits Qi, strengthens willpower, promotes tooth growth, and prevents aging.
Chen Xiuyuan stated: The deer is an immortal beast with longevity. When lying down, its mouth and nose face the Weilu point to connect with the Du Mai (Governing Vessel); the Du Mai is the master of all bone joints. Since the Kidneys govern bones, the deer also tonifies the Kidneys. When the Kidneys are tonified, willpower becomes strong and teeth become firm, because Will (Zhi) resides in the Kidneys, and teeth are the surplus of bones. When the Du Mai is tonified, the Great Qi rises, and dark blood does not leak, because the Du Mai is the commander of Yang Qi. However, the antler is penetrated by blood, and the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) is the Sea of Blood; thus, it is known to greatly tonify the Chong Mai. Diseases such as convulsions and epilepsy always arise with the Chong Mai. When Yin Qi is deficient and cannot remain tranquil internally, it attaches to Yang Qi and ascends, resulting in upper heat and lower cold. When Yang Qi is deficient and cannot circulate to protect the body, it sinks with Yin Qi, resulting in lower heat and upper cold. Deer antler velvet enters the Chong Mai and greatly tonifies blood, thereby treating alternating chills, fever, convulsions, and epilepsy. As for the antler growing later, the *Bie Lu* states it treats malignant sores and expels evil Qi. Since the embryonic blood has been fully exhausted, it only possesses the function of dispersing toxins.
