[Liu Xu (Willow Catkin)]
Taste: Bitter. Nature: Cold. Indications: Mainly treats Fengshui disease (wind-water edema), jaundice, and facial heat with dark complexion. Also known as Liu Xu. Leaves mainly treat equine scabies and crusty wounds. Fruits mainly treat ulcerated carbuncles, expelling pus and blood. Seed juice treats thirst. Habitat: Grows in rivers and marshes.
(Eulogy) The willow branches are lush and graceful, appearing reluctant to part. In spring, soft catkins emerge on the islets; yellow pollen brushes against the skin like cracked fish scales, while white catkins cling like washed velvet. Under the sun, hanging willow twigs resemble tassels; when the wind blows, willow seeds fly like scattered rice grains. One recalls those years, comparing the benevolence of the sweet locust tree.
Liu Shen's poem: "The lush willows play in the light shade." *Shi Jing* (Classic of Poetry): "The willows are lush and clinging." *Xia Xiao Zheng* commentary on February: "Fa Fu Ye." *Qun Fang Pu* records: Initially growing over an inch tall, it blooms with yellow flowers, with fine, fragmented scale-like protrusions on top. Leaves gradually grow, and upon maturity, small seeds form within the flowers, resembling millet grains—thin, flat, black, topped with white fluffy catkins that dance in the wind. Xue Neng's poem: "Green twigs hang like tassels, the setting sun shines lightly on the farewell banquet." Lu You's poem: "Again resembling Magu throwing rice." *History of the Southern Dynasties* records: Willows are charming and lovely, reminiscent of Zhang Xu's demeanor in his prime. *Book of Southern Qi* records: Wang Jingze planted willows at the North Pavilion; Yu Changyao said, "People in the north regard them as sweet locust trees."
[Lian Shi (Chinaberry Fruit)]
Taste: Bitter. Nature: Cold. Indications: Mainly treats Wenji Shanghan (warm diseases and cold damage), high fever, restlessness, and mania. Kills three types of parasites and treats scabies and sores. Promotes urination through the water passages. Habitat: Grows in mountains and valleys.
(Eulogy) Flowers rise and fall in red and purple hues; the flower message winds cycle continuously. Golden bells sway gently; pearl-like pellets are soft and light. They provide food for nestlings; successful cultivation requires seeking female plants. Flesh and pits are distinguished by nature, not by mutual agreement.
Han Yu's poem: "Red and purple flowers rise and fall against each other." *Sui Shi Ji* records: The flower message winds begin with plum blossoms and end with chinaberry flowers. Li Shizhen states: The formal name is Jinlingzi (Golden Bell). Meng Haoran's poem: "Young masters carry pearl pellets." Su Song states: It blooms red-purple in the third and fourth lunar months; fruits are pellet-sized. *History of the Southern Dynasties* records: Whatever is provided, nothing is received. *Nong Shu* records: Nestlings eat its fruits. *Jing Zhu Zi* states: It can generate good seeds. *Shi Jing*: "Still seeking its female." Su Gong states: There are male and female varieties; only the female bears fruit. Lei Xiao's *Lei Lun* records: When processing, use the flesh but not the pit; if using the pit, do not use the flesh. *Analects*: "Those whose paths differ cannot plan together."
[Yuli Ren (Bush Cherry Kernel)]
Taste: Sour. Nature: Neutral. Indications: Mainfully treats abdominal distension with edema, and swelling of the face, eyes, and limbs. Promotes urination through the water passages. Roots mainly treat broken teeth and gum swelling, and strengthen teeth. Also known as Jueli. Habitat: Grows in rivers and valleys.
(Eulogy) Flowers are white tinged with red; fragrance is abundant, branches are soft. A gentle breeze blows under warm weather; sunny days bring warmth. Honey-soaked kernels are fragrant; boiled roots are short. They do not accept fertilizer or filth; they are suitable for clean washing.
Zhao's poem: "Red and white flowers adorn the dense branches." Bai Juyi's poem: "Fragrance is abundant, branches are weak and soft." Tao Qian's poem: "Spring wind fans a slight harmony." Zhou Han's poem: "Sunshine warms until empty." *Hua Shi* records: It prefers warm days and gentle breezes; water it with clear water because of its inherently clean nature. Lei Xiao's *Lei Lun* records: Remove the skin and tips of the kernel, soak in raw honey overnight, and grind into a paste for use. Ri Hua Zi states: Root decoctions treat childhood fevers; bathe the child in the soup. *Gongyang Zhuan* commentary: "White and pure, refusing contamination." *History of Jin* records: "Thus cleanse your hands."
