Lily Bulb (Baihe): Sweet in taste, neutral in nature. Primarily treats abdominal distension and heart pain caused by pathogenic factors; promotes urination and defecation; tonifies the middle jiao and supplements qi. Grows in mountain valleys.
The bulb resembles garlic and holds like a lotus flower. At night, its fragrance attracts attention; branches extend in four directions, tightly closed at the center where they meet. Its taste surpasses that of taro (Dunci). Legend has it that it transforms from entangled earthworms. It resembles willow leaves and daylilies. Cultivated in field ridges.
Tao Hongjing stated: The root resembles wild garlic. *Erya Yi* described it as resembling a white lotus. Chen Chun's poem said: "At night, the fragrance fills the room." Li Shizhen stated: The flowers, leaves, and roots of this plant all spread in four directions. Famous physicians called it Zhongfeng Hua (Flower Meeting in the Middle). An anonymous Song dynasty poem said: "Its texture is soft and warm, surpassing taro." *Sui Shi Guang Ji* mentioned: Some say it is formed by earthworms twisting and knotting together. *Qun Fang Pu* recorded: Red-flowered lily (Shandan) has willow-like leaves; Tiger Lily (Juandan) has daylily-like flowers; their roots resemble lily bulbs but are distinctly different. Shi Guan's fu wrote: "Maintaining sincerity is not confined to field ridges."
Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu): Bitter in taste, cold in nature. Primarily treats polydipsia (Xiaoke) and internal heat; eliminates pathogenic factors; treats limb edema; promotes water metabolism; tonifies deficiencies and supplements qi. Also known as Mu, Lianmu, Yeliao, Dican, Shuican, Shuijun, Huomu, and [missing character] mu. Grows in river valleys.
Perennial roots produce lateral sub-roots, resembling the larvae of horseflies. Calling out various "mother" names, succeeding one another like a group of children. Processed through steaming and drying with fire fixation; washed with hot water to nourish yin. Suitable for processing on a locust wood cutting board; incompatible with wrought iron.
Li Shizhen stated: Sub-roots grow beside the perennial roots, resembling horsefly larvae. *Book of Rites* stated: "Zi Chan was like the mother of the common people." Famous physicians called it Ercao (Child Grass) and Erzhangcao (Child Heel Grass). Li Gao stated: It has four main therapeutic effects: treating bone-steaving fever with sweating; draining rootless kidney fire; stopping heat from consumptive disorders; and nourishing the yin of the source of transformation. Lei Xiao's treatise on processing stated: When using Anemarrhena, crush it on a locust wood board; do not let it touch iron vessels.
Fritillaria Bulb (Beimu): Pungent in taste, neutral in nature. Primarily treats vexatious heat from cold damage (Shanghan); dysuria; pathogenic factors; hernia and masses; throat obstruction (Houbi); difficulty in lactation; traumatic injuries; wind-induced spasms. Also known as Kongcao.
Ascending that high hill, objects melt and the mind comprehends. Leaves emerge with the shoots; roots connect and gather at the stem. Harvest when the garlic (Hu) is ripe; gather old, shell-like medicinal materials. The essence condenses into Danlong Jing (Dragon Essence); mistaken ingestion causes tendons and vessels to lose tone.
The *Classic of Poetry* states: "Ascending that high hill." The commentary on the poem states: Collecting Fritillaria is primarily for treating stagnation and knotting diseases. Jiang Xiufu's poem states: "The mind comprehends, the realm and objects merge." Su Song stated: Leaves emerge following the shoots. Commentary on the *Classic of Poetry* stated: The fruit of Fritillaria grows under the root, attached and connected. Su Gong stated: It is best harvested when garlic matures. *Erya Yi* stated: Garlic is called Hu. Tao Hongjing stated: Its shape resembles clustered shells. Lei Xiao's treatise on processing stated: Among Fritillaria, single bulbs are named Danlong Jing; mistaken ingestion causes flaccidity and inability to contract tendons and vessels.
