**Musk (Shexiang)**: Pungent, warm. Primarily expels evil qi. Kills demonic spirits and strange entities. Treats warm malaria (Wen Nue) and gu poison. Treats epilepsy (Xian). Eliminates three types of parasites. Long-term consumption removes pathogenic factors, prevents nightmares, and ensures peaceful sleep. Grows in mountain valleys.
(Praise): It harbors cold fragrance, highly prized by mountain farmers. Its traces follow the shade of pines, surpassing the taste of cypress leaves. Extracted like something discarded, its capture induces regret as deep as biting one's own navel, inspiring fear. Its fragrance shoots far and wide, causing people in gardens to hold their breath.
*Pi Ya* records: Musk consumes many snakes in summer, leading to the condensation of cold fragrance. Li Shizhen states: Musk inhabits mountains, while deer inhabit marshes; this distinguishes them. *Zhou Li* records that the official Zhang Ge collects materials from mountain farmers at appropriate times. Guo Deng's poem states: "All things are precious when they meet their time." Huang Liezi hunted in Jiujiang, tracking traces to find dens. Han Hong's poem states: "Fragrant musk lies within the pine shade." Tao Qian's poem states: "Tasting delicacies feels like returning home." Tao Hongjing states: Musk often eats cypress leaves. Su Song states: The first grade is musk extracted by its own claws, named "Yi Xiang" (Discarded Fragrance). The second grade is umbilical musk, obtained after hunting. Poetic references include: "Abandoned like trash," "Regretting later is like biting one's navel," "Fear not being alone." Ma Zuchang's poem states: "Moonlight shines far on the white, distinct flowers." An anonymous Tang dynasty fu states: "The cage flows with the rich aroma of musk." Su Song states: Where musk fragrance gathers, grass and trees do not grow; where it passes through gardens, melons and fruits do not bear fruit. *Analects* quotes: "Holding his breath as if he were not breathing."
**Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang)**: Bitter, neutral. Primarily treats fright, epilepsy, and alternating cold and heat. Treats mania caused by excessive heat. Removes pathogenic factors and drives away demons. Grows in marshy areas.
(Praise): Like a raging beast roaring, the precious yellow substance of China and beauty. The spirit-connected horn breaks, feeling condensed in the heart. Butterflies flying signal anomalies; camel-like creatures know how to defend. Hiding its name, it is considered an ugly treasure, cultivating obscurity and hiding its brilliance.
Tao Hongjing states: When divine cows enter or exit and roar, Calculus Bovis appears. Hao Jing's poem states: "Roaring angrily like a madman." *Zuo Zhuan* quotes Zi Fu Huibo: "China and beauty can produce yellow." Yang Ziyun states: "Its virtue is precious like yellow." Liu Ji's poem states: "Even literary rhinoceros horns have spiritual connections." *Yi Lin* states: "The lame cow breaks its horn." Wang Yi's song states: "Sorrow and feelings condense, sighing repeatedly." *Classic of Poetry* quotes: "Hidden in the center of the heart." *Youyang Zazu* records: Someone obtained yellow vomited by a cow; upon cutting it open, there was something inside that flew away like a butterfly. Li Shizhen states: Camel calculus resembles Calculus Bovis but lacks its efficacy. Because it belongs to the Ox (Chou), its name is hidden. *Book of Rites* quotes: "How dare I know how to defend?" Famous physicians state: Do not let it see sunlight or moonlight. *Classic of Poetry* quotes: "Nourish in obscurity." Kong Rong's poem states: "Beautiful jade hides its light."
