[Realgar]
Bitter, neutral and cold. It primarily treats chills and fever, lymphatic tuberculosis (Shu Lou) and malignant sores, carbuncles, hemorrhoids, and necrotic tissue. It kills spirits, evil ghosts, pathogenic factors, and the venom of a hundred insects, and protects against weapons.
After calcination and ingestion, it lightens the body and leads to immortality. Also known as Huangshi Shi (Yellow Food Stone). Grows in mountain valleys.
Wu Pu records: Realgar, Shennong states its flavor is bitter. Dan Realgar exists on the north side of mountains, but grows on the south side, hence called "Xiong" (Male), being the male aspect of Cinnabar, thus named Realgar.
Mingyi Bie Lu records: Grows in the southern areas of Wudu Commandery and Dunhuang Commandery. Can be harvested at any time.
Commentary: The Classic of Mountains and Seas (Western Regions) states: Below high mountains, there is much Realgar. Guo Pu stated: In the third year of Taixing during the Jin Dynasty, a landslide occurred in Gaoping Commandery, from which thousands of jin of Realgar emerged. Baopuzi · Chapter on Immortal Drugs states: Realgar should be obtained from Mount Wu, pure without impurities, red like a rooster's comb, shining brightly; only this can be used for immortal drugs. Those that are purely yellow resembling Realgar but lacking red luster cannot be used for immortal drugs, but only for treating illnesses.
[Pyrite / Sulfur] (Note: "Liu" was traditionally written as "Liu" (Sulfur). Tai Ping Yu Lan cites it as "Liu", which is correct.)
Acid, warm. It primarily treats vaginal erosion/ulceration in women, abscesses, hemorrhoids, and foul blood, strengthens bones and tendons, removes scalp baldness, and can melt gold, silver, copper, and iron. (Tai Ping Yu Lan citation: Pyrite...)
