When a Ding sore (a type of severe, localized skin infection) first appears, people often do not notice it. It can occur on the head, face, hands, feet, abdomen, flanks, waist, or legs, with no fixed location. Within one or two days, chills and fever resembling malaria will inevitably occur; this is a Ding sore. The causes of this sore vary, and its manifestations differ accordingly.
The Pig-type Ding sore is round and small, with an oily substance inside the sore opening (⊙). The Sheep-type Ding sore is elongated and white ( ). The Cow-type Ding sore is round and small, with no oily substance inside the sore opening (○). The Dog-type Ding sore is caused by toxins from pigs, cows, dogs, sheep, donkeys, and horses. Drinking unclean stagnant water can also cause Water-type Ding sores. If human sweat contaminates tofu, eating it can lead to Tofu-type Ding sores. There are also Qi-type and Ghost-type Ding sores; although their shapes vary, the treatment principles remain the same.
Slow-changing sore color: On the first day, the top of the sore is slightly white; on the second day, it is distinctly white; on the third day, it becomes slightly purple; on the fourth day, it turns truly purple. Rapidly-changing sore color: On the fifth day, it is slightly green (pulse is small and tight); on the sixth day, it is deeply green (pulse is large and tight); on the seventh day, it turns black. Its appearance resembles a fish's navel or a moxibustion scar, representing the most critical condition.
Auspicious sore signs: Presence of "response." If, besides the primary Ding sore, a smaller sore appears on the flesh elsewhere on the body, this indicates a "response." It can be punctured with a needle to protect the surrounding healthy tissue (protective field). If there are no new sores on the flesh around the main sore, failing to form a protective field, with no redness or swelling around the Ding sore but intense internal toxicity, accompanied by thirst, inability to eat, dizziness, blurred vision, immobility in bed, inability to rise, cloudy whites of the eyes, fixed pupils, cyanotic lips and tongue, and abdominal pain. In severe cases, internal Ding sores, swelling of the five centers (palms, soles, and chest), cold extremities, coarse breathing, and absence of pulse may occur.
To treat various Ding sores, even when fatal symptoms appear successively and all six pulses are absent suggesting death, this formula can manage them.
Chan Su (Toad Venom, minor amount) Xin Shi (Arsenolite, minor amount) Chan Tui (Cicada Slough, three pieces, remove legs and wings) Wu Gong Tou (Centipede Head, one piece) Ban Mao (Mylabris Beetle, three pieces, remove legs and wings) Guo Dan (National Cinnabar, five qian) Feng Hua Duan Shi (Weathered Calcined Alumen, one liang, placed in a clay pot, covered with a tile, calcined over charcoal fire for two shichen/hours, then removed).
Process each ingredient separately, grind them together into an extremely fine powder. Use the mucus scraped from the inner layer of scallion white skin to mix the medicine. First, pierce the sore opening with a grain-of-wheat leaf needle, to a depth of half cun.
Because sore toxins tend to move toward the heart, needling should follow the movement of the toxic qi. After withdrawing the needle, if foul blood flows from the sore, ensure it is completely drained. Take a grain-of-wheat-sized pellet of Chan Su (Toad Venom), insert it into the sore opening, push it deep with a needle, and then apply the medicine mixed with scallion juice onto the sore opening. Do not apply it to healthy skin. Soak twenty to thirty layers of cloth in cold water, place them over the medication, and seal the sore tightly. If sealed in the early morning, by evening if the sore feels hot, remove the paper, wash clean with water, and sprinkle Yu Hong San (Jade Red Powder) into the sore. The sore will likely hurt for several days; continue sprinkling Yu Hong San and wash daily with scallion decoction. Although Ding sores are dangerous and malignant, as long as the sore is opened with a needle, Chan Su (Toad Venom) is inserted, and the sore is sealed with Tao Hong San (Peach Red Powder), recovery can be ensured. If the pain in the sore is unbearable, do not worry; this is not due to the Ding toxin itself, but because Chan Su (Toad Venom) is corroding the toxin, causing pain. One may collect Furong leaves... [text incomplete]. When a Ding sore first erupts, chills, fever, and body pain inevitably occur because the toxic qi is at the exterior; it should be resolved through sweating, using Zi Fei Tang (Self-Boiling Decoction) as the primary treatment. For the elderly, deficient individuals, and pregnant women, sweating and purging methods are unsuitable; only Tao Hong San (Peach Red Powder) should be used to draw out the toxin.
