This eye disease, in its initial stage, is characterized by frequent itching or astringency, with symptoms appearing intermittently and vision becoming frequently dim. When the condition becomes extremely severe, only a dim yellowish hue is visible, and objects cannot be seen clearly; the patient can only see objects directly below. It is appropriate to administer Xi Gan Tang (Liver-Washing Decoction) and Xie Gan Tang (Liver-Draining Decoction), which will lead to recovery.
The poem states:
Although Night Blindness (Que Mu) seems mild, it should not be underestimated. In children, it may develop into Gan Yi (Gan cataract/clouding); in adults, it results from Liver deficiency and exhaustion, further aggravated by Wind pathogen attacking the root cause.
Flower-like shadows appear before the eyes as one looks around. If one does not worry about subsequent complications, ignorance persists. Over many years, both eyes will inevitably lose sight, making it rare to see the sun, moon, and stars again in later life.
Xi Gan Tang (Liver-Washing Decoction)
Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen), Hei Shen (Black Ginseng/Scrophulariae Radix variant contextually), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Chong Wei Zi (Chuanxiong Herba Seed - *Note: Traditionally Chong Wei Zi refers to Leonuri Fructus*, Leonuri Fructus) (each 2 liang).
Crush and sieve the above herbs into powder. Take one zhan of water, add 5 fen of the powder, put in 37 black beans, decoct until 5 fen remains. Remove the black beans. Take one dose on an empty stomach, and one dose before going to bed.
Xie Gan Tang (Liver-Draining Decoction)
Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 2 liang), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (each 2 liang).
Crush and sieve the above herbs into powder. Take one zhan of water, add half a qian of the powder, decoct until 5 fen remains. Strain and take warm before meals.
In the initial stage of this eye disease, there is accumulated heat in the Liver rushing upward, deficiency and exhaustion of the Kidney, and concurrent attack by Wind pathogen. The Qi of the Liver is insufficient, leading to this ailment. This differs from the previous condition, and visual perception is distinct; the patient can only see objects above the head, which then progresses to Qing Mang (blindness/field loss). It is appropriate to administer Bu Gan San (Liver-Nourishing Powder) and Huan Jing Wan (Eye-Recovering Pill), which will lead to recovery.
The poem states:
The previous chapter on Night Blindness has already identified the root cause. Why discuss this chapter repeatedly? Only because the symptoms are similar yet different, necessitating a separate exposition for Gao Feng Que Mu (High-Wind Night Blindness).
One type involves seeing nothing at dusk; observing celestial phenomena is always difficult to distinguish. After many years, the pupils turn golden. To truly identify High-Wind Night Blindness requires accurate recognition.
What medicine is excellent for the initial treatment of both eyes? Entering the mouth like fire burning kindling. If the root of Wind and Exhaustion is removed, health can be preserved for thousands of autumns and ten thousand springs.
Bu Gan San (Liver-Nourishing Powder)
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen), Chuan Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 1 liang), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 2 liang), Hei Shen (Black Ginseng) (2.5 liang).
Grind the above herbs into powder. Take one zhan of water, add 1 qian of the powder, decoct until 5 fen remains. Strain and take warm.
Huan Jing Wan (Eye-Recovering Pill)
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Xiong Duan (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (each 1 liang), Shi Jue Ming (Haliotidis Concha), Chong Wei Zi (Leonuri Fructus) (each 2 liang).
Grind the above herbs into powder. Make pills using refined honey, sized like tung tree seeds. Take ten pills with tea on an empty stomach.
