Jizhou Guo Jiaming Shang Gao (Ointment from Guo Jiaming of Jizhou): Treats long-standing or recent loss of vision, internal and external eye obstructions, pterygium (growth of conjunctiva over cornea), redness and ulceration of eyelids, dryness and difficulty opening eyes, photophobia, tearing with discharge, blurred vision, frequent seeing of black spots, millet-like bumps on eyelids, nebula invading the pupil, and intermittent itching and pain. This medicine is miraculous and its effects cannot be fully described; it also treats mouth ulcers, curing them immediately upon application. The Prefect of Jizhou once combined internal administration with external use, yielding remarkable results.
Ingredients: Baisha Mi (White Sand Honey, 白沙蜜) (1 jin), Huangdan (Lead Oxide, 黄丹) (4 qian), Sha (Borax, 砂 - note: context implies refined borax or similar mineral salt, often processed separately), Ruxiang (Frankincense, 乳香) (processed separately), Qingyan (Halite, 青盐), Qingfen (Calomel, 轻粉), Pengsha (Borax, 硼砂) (all processed separately, each 2 qian), Shexiang (Moschus, 麝香) (processed separately, 5 fen), Jin Xingshi (Venus Stone, 金星石), Yin Xingshi (Silver Star Stone, 银星石), Jingquanshi (Well Spring Stone, 井泉石), Yunmu Shi (Mica, 云母石) (each 1 liang), Naozi (Borneol, 脑子) (processed separately, 2 qian), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 黄连) (remove roots), Wuyu Gu (Cuttlefish Bone, 乌鱼骨) (each 5 qian).

Add honey and boil until a drop does not disperse in water, turning entirely purple. Add three sheng of snow water collected in the twelfth lunar month, boil for more than twenty cycles. Mix in the powdered remaining ingredients and continue boiling. Test by dripping onto a fingernail; if it forms a cohesive bead without spreading, it is ready. Filter through three layers of thick paper placed on a bamboo sieve. Store in a bottle and soak in fresh water for three days and nights to remove "fire toxicity," changing the water daily. For severe cases, apply a small amount to the outer canthus of the eye at dusk using a chopstick tip, stopping when a sensation of dryness is felt. For internal cataracts, mix flour and water into strips, shape into rings, place on the eye before sleep, and pour the medicine inside. Use for one month to see results.
Wutui San (Five Molted Shells Powder): An effective prescription for treating internal eye obstructions.

Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill): When Tang Dynasty Chancellor Li Gong accompanied the emperor to Shu, he suffered from daily eye problems: sometimes dryness, sometimes nebula formation, sometimes pain, sometimes seeing black spots as large as beans appearing continuously in dozens, or seeing images like flying insect wings. Various treatments failed. Monk Zhishen said: "Your Excellency's illness is due to wind-toxin. When the five zang organs are excess, drain the child organ; when deficient, tonify the mother organ. The mother makes the child excess; the child makes the mother deficient. Kidney is the mother of Liver. If Kidney receives wind-toxin, it causes Liver deficiency. Liver deficiency leads to visual hallucinations. The same applies to other zang organs. Conditions such as jiaoxie (foot disease), xiaoke (wasting-thirst syndrome), and various wind disorders all stem from Kidney deficiency. Dihuang Wan treats all of these."
Ingredients: Sheng Gan Dihuang (Fresh Dried Rehmanniae Radix, 生干地黄) (1 jin), Shu Gan Dihuang (Processed Dried Rehmanniae Radix, 熟干地黄) (1 jin), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis, 石斛) (remove sprouts, 4 liang), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 防风) (remove rhizome, 4 liang), Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus, 枳壳) (bran-fried, 4 liang), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, 牛膝) (wine-soaked), Xingren (Pruni Armeniaci Semen, 杏仁) (remove skin and tips, bran-fried yellow, ground to powder, oil removed in earthenware).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder, avoiding iron vessels. Form pills with refined honey, size of paulownia seeds. Take 50 pills on an empty stomach with Doulin Jiu (Bean-Dripping Wine).
Doulin Jiu Method: Half sheng of Heidou (Black Soybeans, 黑豆), cleaned and winnowed, stir-fried until smoke appears. Soak in three sheng of wine. Do not consume the beans, only use this wine to cook Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, 独活). This is known as Zitang (Purple Soup).
