At the initial onset of this eye condition, there is sudden itching, pain, and tearing. The five wheels (the anatomical regions of the eye corresponding to the five Zang organs) all become hard and difficult to rotate, making it impossible to distinguish people. It is essential to use acupuncture to guide the blood vessels and apply Mofeng Gao (Wind-Rubbing Ointment) for massage. This disease is caused by heat accumulation in the five Zang organs rushing upward, combined with wind-heat from the brain invading the eyes. It is suitable to take Xiegan Tang (Liver-Draining Decoction) and Choufeng San (Wind-Extracting Powder), which will produce immediate effects.
Poem:
The five wheels are hard, difficult to rotate;
Hu Yan Ning Jing (Hawk-Eye Staring Condition) is its original form.
To know where the deep root originates:
Brain wind-heat steams within the viscera.
First, use acupuncture to draw out the wind stagnation;
Medicine pressed and rubbed promotes blood vessel flow.
Original damage should only be drained outwardly;
Removing anger and regulating conduct leads to peace.
Xiegan Tang (Liver-Draining Decoction)
Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Chongweizi (Choris Fructus), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Heishen (Adenophorae Radix or Polygalae Radix - *Note: Black Ginseng usually refers to Adenophora or Polygonatum in ancient texts, here likely Adenophorae*), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (each 1 liang).
Grind the above into powder. Use one cup of water, add one qian of the powder, decoct until reduced to half a cup. Strain and take warm after meals.
Choufeng San (Wind-Extracting Powder)
Shijueming (Haliotidis Concha), Fuling (Poria), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (each 1.5 liang).
Pulverize and sieve the above into fine powder. After meals, mix one qian 7 fen with rice water and take orally.
At the initial onset of this eye condition, it is due to toxic stagnation in the chest and diaphragm, extreme liver heat, and wind-toxin invading the brain. This causes the eyelids to retract upwards, the pupil to be difficult to rotate, and an inability to distinguish people. Those who contracted this in the womb are incurable. If treated urgently at the initial onset, it is suitable to take Tianshendong Yinzi (Asparagi Decoction) and Xiegan San (Liver-Draining Powder).
Poem:
Upper lid hides, lower lid hides;
It does not settle steadily in the center.
Turning the joint resembles a winch turning;
The sage's words are hard to change or expand.
Though it is said the disease cannot be cured,
It merely teaches people to recognize its form.
Alas, forever dwelling in darkness,
Unable to distinguish blue and yellow, sitting for long periods.
